However to be able to help further - which operating system are you using? (Windows XP, XP Pro, Vista - also an indication of which service pack) If you are not sure on this press "Windows" key and "pause/Break" Key at same time and it'll show you on screen. | | Junior Member with 13 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: kansas city | | i am using windows xp and as far as the service pack i do not recall. I tried the window button and pause/break at same time but the screen is stuck on the blue screen with the same old message about windows shut down to prevent damaqge---any ideas?????????? | | Senior Member with 354 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Surrey - England Experience: Not as good as JohnWill | | If you have the original OEM or retail disc for Windows XP - start up with the CD in place. At this stage you are looking to repair the installation - NOT a complete reinstall. Opting for a repair - if you can get to C:\ prompt - type in "chkdsk". (without ""). If you need further detail on how to do this - post back> | | Junior Member with 13 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: kansas city | | HCD
I tried your chkdsk but as soon as the screen comes upit says dell for approx 2 seconds then flashes to a screen that give u a choice of start windows normally o safe mode safe with networking or safe with command prompt--nothing worked by putting disk in then starting it up.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | | Member with 85 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Canada Experience: Intermediate | | When you were asked to start with those options and you chose one how long did you wait? Systems may take up to 5 minutes to start up to safe mode. You should get a list of "drivers" for a bit, then it should go to Windows, this is normally how Windows starts, but you get a Windows "Startup" screen instead.
Try waiting for a few minutes then see if you can get into Windows, then run a Chkdsk, which can be found by right clicking your local drive, clicking properties, then under tools press "Error-Checking."
If this doesn't work, you may need to reformat your hard drive and start with a fresh version of Windows. | | Junior Member with 13 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: kansas city | | toxication.d,
when the windows start up screen comes up it lasts about 2-4 seconds and then goes to the screen that states windows shut down to prevent damage--i clicked on safe mode and left it for 45 minutes to no avail.
how do I go about reformating the hard drive | | Registered User with 722 posts. | | | | Do you know how to get into the BIOS setup? All newer PC's can select the option to boot first off the CD in BIOS. This is how you would get the XP CD to boot and let you select a repair.
Never done that in WIndows. It might be possible. But you can't get to Windows anyway. | | Junior Member with 13 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: kansas city | | Mrss

#10 | Rather than recreate a whole ream of stuff, follow the link below - which explains how to boot the Windows XP CD. http://www.pcguide.com/byop/byop_Boo...etupScreen.htm
If the XP CD does not boot automatically, you will need to change BIOS settings to ensure the PC loads the disc on hitting the power!. Again this is covered quite well on the following link http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe...rderchange.htm
You may want to print info. from the above links, as you might need this info. should you get a problem in the future.

#13 | You still have to make the bios boot to the cd drive to reinstall anyway.
After pressing the power button , begin tapping F2 until you enter setup. Then find the "boot order" or "boot priority" and you will see directions on how to change the order. You want to boot to the floppy drive if you have one first, the cd drive and then hard drive. Then restart with XP cd in the drive and watch for the message "press any key to boot to cd" and you will be on your way. Try chkdsk /r first from recovery console oh and when prompted for Admin Password, you probably have noe simply put in cursor and click nothing then hit enter to pass on. | | Junior Member with 13 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: kansas city |
