Do you get anything related to Spybot, like the first splash screen?

You may have had a bad download. Uninstall your current version and download it again.

Consider getting the superantispyware program. I've found that it is much better as a second antispyware program than Spybot.

Spybot will inform you that Ad-Aware being installed can pose compatibility issues if it detects Ad-Aware is installed on your system. I haven't had any problems running Ad-Aware 2008 and Spybot S&D 1.5.2 on the same system. What versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot are you using?

Peace...

You could do an uninstall and reinstall. Use Revo Uninstaller and use the Advanced mode. Remove all traces. Then reinstall Spybot.

Or, first, try rebooting the system. It solves 99% of problems.
