AVG 8, Can anyone explain to me the positives of it...
Just upgraded to it from 7.something, and i wasnt impressed at all, seems very complicated to use and is a resource hog imo! The main reason i ever got AVG in the first place was because it was free and very easy to use. Why should i bother with it?? And what are the best free alternatives? I have just got AVAST, seems ok so far..

Avira's AntiVir is a worthy alternative.

I'm actually pretty happy with AVG (on my computer) but avast was awful.. Avira seems ok.

Why do you say that Avast was awful? Just curious...

It basically took over my computer. And wouldn't let me uninstall it. I can't remember how I got it off..

With all the legitimate web sites being hijacked and distributing malware, AVG 8 does have one positive thing about it - it scans every link result from google and tells you if it is safe.

Siteadvisor does that too, but does nothing for embedded links in a website.

Does AVG 8.0 scan links within a page and hold up your browser if you click on it for a manual OK if it's not safe?

Thats the one thing I hate about it .. in fact that feature is disabled on my computer (if you are a dial up user or have a bandwidth cap it is a nightmare come true). My initial complaints about AVG 8 were all cleared up with service pack one (you can now choose to not install link scanner being one issue fixed .... conflicts with some popular antispyware software being fixed another)

You can click on and go to a site before it is finished scanning .... which sometimes can take quite a while

Do any other AVs scan incoming and outgoing email? That's why I keep AVG 8

I think most or all scan email, I know Avast does. As for the AVG web link scanning. I think that Firefox has that built in doesn't it? At least, I'm not running AVG, and I get messages anytime I try to open a bad site.

I don't think the free version of avira scans email (POP 3 or SMTP), so far as I know any of the others can be configured to do it.

firefox does block some malicious sites, I believe link scanner takes it a step further by scanning sites for bad files and blocking them based on what it finds

AVG made an update and now only scans pages as you click on them. See the following news item:
