AVG 7.5 Remnants from Uninstall
Didn't know that AVG stopped supporting AVG Free 7.5 on Aug. 1st. No wonder I couldn't install the latest virus updates. So I tried uninstalling it. Wouldn't uninstall using Start:Settings:Control Panel:Add or Remove Programs. Tried installing AVG Free 8.1 and after a 2 1/2 download (by modem) found out that it doesn't work on WIN 98 SE (my OS).

So, I went into REGEDIT, and removed any software folders from Grisoft. Tried rebooting.

Got three sequential messages that I had to "Hit any key to continue" to get through the reboot:

1st: C:\Progra~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\AVG7CORE.VXD
2nd: Same except ended AVG7RS.VXD
3rd: Same except ended AVGTPI.VXD

So I opened MSCONFIG and looked at System.INI. There were three AVG lines checked although they didn't correspond to the messages in the DOS reboot. SO I unchecked them. Also check the STARTUP folder and unchecked 3 AVG lines that weren't the same as the ones being referenced during reboot.

Rebooted again, and still got the message that either the Registry orSystem.ini were detecting those 3 files as being referred to but missing.

Checked the program list, and found AVG still there. Highlighted it and deleted it.

Reboot ended up with the same three referenced missing files.

Went back into REGEDIT, and deleted a whole bunch of AVG keys in Root.

Reboot ended up the same again.

Tried System Infomation, Chck Files. Nothing showed up.

Tried FIND FILES, with either .exe or .vxb file endings. None showed up.

Tried Evidence Eliminator. Tried MS Registry Cleaner. Tried everything I know how to do.

Tried MS-DOS Prompt, but its been so long, forgot how to get out of C:\Windows into C:\ hoping that I could find those references and delete them.

Nothing worked. Help???

Thanks,
doc

Sounds like a mess to me. Since you have already done some alterations to the registry, this may not help you, but it is AVG`s removal tool. It is found at their site here: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools

Thanks, but as I pointed out, I have Windows 98SE which is not supported by AVG 8.1.

Have already installed Avast and am very happy with it. Just gotta get rid of those remnant references to those last 3 .vxd AVG files!

do a clean reinstall and then uninstall.

Or just format and reinstall your OS. I did that with 98SE, painless. and so lightweight..sigh vista.

Problem Solved!
Downloaded the trial version of Registry Mechanic. It scanned the system, found 243 "problems", only 3 of which were the "virtual" files of AVG. They want you to "register and pay" for them to "urgently repair" your system.

I just looked at the source of the 3 virtual files and found they were in HKEY_Local_Machine\System\Current Settings\VXD.

Deleted them and problem solved. Computer boots cleanly now.

Thanks for all your replies!
