AVG Problem
Hi

I have AVG Free 8 and it has just disabled itself because I have a bin file missing.

Any idea how to fix it.

Regards

I'm glad to see all these complaints about a .bin file missing in AVG 8.

I tried to update mine about 30 minutes ago and got the same warning. I uninstalled it, rebooted, reinstalled it, then tried to update it again. Same warning.

That's when I decided to check the TSG forums to see if anyone else was having the same problem.

We can safely assume that the problem is with the AVG update site and not with our computers.

Update! I just found this posted on the AVG forum site:

UPDATE .BIN error information... Aug 16th 2008

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

So in short... please do not post to report the issue, its already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.

Also... for those user that did report the issue... thanks for the info.

I had a Trojan attack, AVG fixed and then reported a missing bin file. I found it was cured by doing a fresh install of AVG Free 8.0.138, followed by two file down loads and manual update , one for the general app update the other being the 1616 virus database update.

Hi,
I'm not sure if I should be posting in this thread or starting a new one but I also have the same problem. A .bin file is missing.
I went to see if there was an update online at http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update and there is "AVI: 270.6.4" above "IAVI: / 1616".
When I click on "AVI: 270.6.4" it is u7avi135781.bin.

Is this the missing .bin file and if it is where do I save it to?

The error is all over the internet, so we can relax (sort of, now isn't the time I would suggest to search for inappropriate or dodgy things on the web).

here is an explanation at another forum and a possible solution to get the error to stop:

http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/62/t...-file-missing/

Quote:
I came across the same problem but got it sorted.

1 - Start up AVG,click Update Now.
2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link.A list of updates will be shown.
3 - Click on and save all updates in a file except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin - because this is causing the problem.
4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates.Install these and AVG should be working properly again

The link to the bottommost of the 4 files listed has been disabled, so there's no chance of someone downloading all 4 files.

The above instructions work fine, and my AVG 8.0.138.1332 is back to normal.

Thanks, Zorkny.

(Note: When you do a manual scan for updates after getting AVG 8 fixed, it'll bring up version 1616 to be installed. If this is the virus database file that's causing the problem, then it doesn't need to be installed.)

Hi flavallee,
If I click on the more information link, I get the web page that I posted before.
I'm a little confused ..lol
(1616 is the only file listed when I check for updates)

I don't have the URL to that AVG site anymore.

When I clicked on "More information - - -", it opened the AVG site and showed a list of 4 updates.

The direct download from free.grisoft.com aka: free.avg.com did not download BEFORE their web servers bogged out.

This is getting old. Been w/ AVG for close to 10 years, have sold over a dozen corporate subscriptions and never regretted it until a few months ago. Have had to re-install on four separate computers in the last month due to corruptions. That's after redoing every original 8 upgrade that didn't allow you to disable link-scanner, now they finally let you forgo installing it at all. They need extend legacy support until they clean up their mess. If it had said BETA I wouldn't be installing it on client computers. Tried Avast, to bulky and slowed the i-net down more than I liked. Guess it's time to try Avir or Nod. I wish people/companies would do one thing really well, instead of being so-so in a bunch of areas... like AVG used to do before becoming another inadequate, bloated "Suite".

BTW, anyone else getting "access denied" through UTorrent? Try shutting down AVG. ;-)

AVG Missing .Bin File fix
Hi Guys,
It was a bit late last night an the missis was moaning!

Here is a bit more detail regarding the 'missing .bin file AVG problem fix.

I did an uninstall and then a fresh install of AVG free 8.0.138. To my surprise I found it still had the missing .bin file issue when I did the first auto update.

So I went back to Grisoft to do the updates manually, you download the file to a convenient place on your harddisk and do a 'tools/update from file' in the AVG top menu bar. I found the first update 'Windows 8.0.164' was fine. Tried an auto update again and it still gave the missing .Bin file report. I think I noticed in the update dialogue it was missing a 1616 bin file. Tried the IAVI:/1616 bin file download from Grisoft.com and it didn't work. So I went to the UK Web site:

http://www.grisoft.com/uk.download-update

The download and 'update from file' worked fine and AVG free is now fully operational, no reported errors with the auto update dialogue.

Must have been a coincidence with the trojan attack?

Still alls working now.

Best regards

Dave

Not sure why you think it must have been a coincidence with a trojan attack ...
Looks like it was just a flaw in the AVG's update files.
Anyway .. The new update this morning is working fine now.
