A real virus warning
Snopes says this is REAL so be careful. I just read about it in an email. YOU ARE WARNED !!!!!

COMPUTER VIRUS WARNING
> The newest virus circulating is the "UPS
> Delivery Failure". You will receive an email from UPS
> Packet Service along with a packet number. NOTE: The word packet is mis-spelled on this line. It will say that they
> were un-able to deliver a package sent to you on such and such a date. It then asks you to print out the invoice copy attached.
DON'T TRY TO PRINT THIS. IT LAUNCHES THE VIRUS
Pass this warning on to all your PC operators at work
> and home. This virus has caused Millions of dollars in
> damage in the past few days.

Do not forward *any* email to everyone in your address book. This causes more problems than any single virus. (I think that posting a warning is OK though-if you have an appropriate forum in your organization.)

If it's your job to 'warn' people then I suppose it's OK-but in that case I'm sure you know better than to tell the people you send the warning to pass it along.

Hm, I don't really believe that this is real. E-mails that ask you to pass it a long to a lot of people, usually ain't real. I also don't believe that snopes has said this is true. A lot of chain mails say that to get people to think it's true.

So check out Snopes yourself. I did, and they do list a warning about this email-and rate it as true. Of course I think this is only the 2nd warning I've seen in 20 years that both was true & included instructions to 'pass it along'. And, as I said earlier, even if it is true it still shouldn't tell you to pass it along. I did, however, send out an email to everyone in our organization reminding them not to open email attachments. That's something that I think needs to be done periodically anyway. I've never understood how people could forget basic security precautions that they should be exercising every day, but they certainly seem to do so. That's something else I've frequently noticed over the past 20 years.

Well calvin-c I very strongly suspect there are far far more people who appreciate being warned about "pending" disasters than there are those that do not appreciate receiving such warnings.
Taking what you say literally----then if any "pending" hurricane is heading your way; don't accept it as a very possible advance warning. Good luck.

buf-c, based on your approach you'd broadcast a warning about a flood to someone living on a mountaintop. (Analogies are slippery since radio broadcasts aren't sent individually whereas eamails are.)

My biggest objection to your approach isn't sending the warning-it's advising others for forward that warning. Again, using that slippery analogy (but the one you introduced this time) I'd eventually receive the warning here in Alaska about the hurricane developing in the Gulf of Mexico. And, by that time (assuming everyone you sent it to forwarded it to everyone they knew, etc.) I'd receive it at least ten thousand times. At which point (if not before) my email server would meltdown.

You believe as you wish and I'll do that also but your analogies are still frozen. Gotta ask this about your email to those in your "organization" as you reported in your second response and I c/p here: I did, however, send out an email to everyone in our organization reminding them not to open email attachments. My question is this: Why did you do that? Is that not a warning? Oh forget it; you use your way and I'll use mine to do such things. Touché
