Question Super - cookies ??
Hi,

My mobile phone company recently re-vamped their web-site (in the last few days), and despite using the ATF cleaner & CCleaner on my pc, their site still 'remembers' my log-in details.

I havent had much time to keep up with security issues lately and I wondered if ATF and CCleaner were becomming a bit dated? + what might be better?

Have you checked Ccleaner Options/cookies/and on the right side it has cookies to save, the cookie you don't want to save you have to put it in the left side, than it will be deleted when you do a cleaning.

Hi guy's,

smidgen: Thanks for that tip but I checked Ccleaner + the website address is included in the 'cookies to delete' section.

hewee: Excellant link & info, I used it to delete the one site that had left a flash cookie on my pc & changed settings NOT to allow any more.

I ran ATF & Ccleaner, re-booted and visited the mobile phone site again only to see that it still 'recognised' my pc.

I have e-mailed their data protection department with a query on all this as I feel it is a serious issue.

- Will post update as soon as I have one.

Your browser could be saving your passwords.

Good thought, but I'm 100% certain thats not the case. I've never liked or taken that option and alway tick the 'do not ask again' box.

But I'll check, in case I was rushing through something at the time - how can I go + see this setting on my browser?

NB: Scrub that -just found option to delete stored passwords - deleted although I couldn't see what was stored. - Re-visited site and it still had my details!

Your welcome

What gets me also is http://www.speedtest.net/index.php site that remembers you and without cookies or flash files.
They must use you IP, computer name or something.
I know I had lots of test in the history but had moved last month and all the history was gone.

Why don't my preference changes save?

Speedtest.net uses web browser cookies to save your preferences. You likely either have cookies disabled or a third-party application is blocking them.

How does Speedtest.net know where I am?

Your location is determined based on your IP address. Speedtest.net uses GeoIP databases from MaxMind to position you on the map and determine your closest server. You can learn more about the MaxMind GeoIP databases here.

But I have cable so the same IP address as others and am behind firewall and a router but it knows me and all the test I have done here at this address or IP address I have now.
So it is getting other info somehow to know me at this IP address.

I don't think they would save your password based on you're IP address, that's definitely unsafe.

Hi jack123,

When you visit your mobile phone company website, do you have to login like at TSG? If so, and you have never logged out, then your account login is what you need to logout from to delete the cookie that is being retained (vs other identifying information from your browser when you visit the website).

Hi Tom,

Thanks for reply. I do indeed have to log in like at TSG. I went and checked your suggestion and unfortunatly, that's not the case.

When I read your reply I thought, well, maybe I just had closed the browser, instead of log out beforehand. But, alas, I went and checked and my details were there on the next visit.

NB: When I say 'my details' I mean only my two mobile phone numbers I have with them. (Not my password details - still need to enter that)

-Still awaiting e-mail reply from them

Here at TSG after a upgrade some years back if you don't keep cookies for the site you have to login each time by putting in your user name and password even if you want your password manager to remember and you check the box to remember. But it will not bring up the password manager so it can never remember you. This effects nettscape, firefox and maybe even IE.
