Just my opinion. I used to have firewall monitoring software on my computer that would alert me to every probe attempt on my IP address, which I grew sick of and disabled it. I spent too much time clicking "Do not allow". I now have a hardware firewall (router), the probe attempts are invisible, and I don't worry about it. No viruses or malware yet. Your mileage may vary.

As soon as you connect to the internet you are pinged by hckers looking for an unprotected machine

Is there a setting not to alert you

Why do you say that an ip 'got onto your network'? Are you using wireless? Is the ip address a local one?
