CA Security - Please Help
I have had CA Security (from roadrunner) and it's been working fine. All of a sudding, the icon (lower right) pops up and said that the Security Center has a problem and needs to shut down. This was originally on my laptop.....

Because I just installed XP SP-3 update, I thought - maybe it hosed something - so I uninstalled the CA security Center and reinstalled (only AV and Cootie stopper - not the Firewall or Spamblocker components). Well, seemed to be OK (right now) - but then I went upstairs to my main computer (which has been running fine and I did not run SP-3 or any new software) and I got the same message as the one downstairs.

CA has encountered a problem and is shutting down. Then my Active Icon goes away..... Am I still protected? There's no way to bring the icon back except to reboot..... anyone know of a problem?

Hi, Haven't heard of any recent problems with the program. But, often we see various issues caused by the latest Updates to these programs...and, pretty soon afterward, a yet newer update clears up the issue, or a fix is offered, so keep looking for an answer at the ISP tech info area, or at the CA support site....

Have you asked either for info about what you are experiencing?

Here's a good checklist of things to do before trying to install SP3> it is for McAfee users, however, it pertains to all antivirus programs (turn things off before installing SP3) so try these things:

CA Security REply
I am (as we speak) on-line with tech support regarding this problem. They 'accessed' my computer (which I really don't like) and uninstalled the 'registry items' with some software. Then went blank.... I assumed I was to reboot, reinstall and the darn thing happed again..... very frustrating..... SO...... I am back on-line with them for the 2nd time...... there is no reason that these files should get hosed. I did NOTHING to this computer..... just happened all by itself.....

I don't think I'm protected when it's not 'live' - in the right hand corner...... right? Kind of a pain and makes you wonder if you should just go with AVG......kind of sad. I really don't mind software..... but don't like this nonsense.

Hi,

There are specific removal tools most all antivirus companies make, to help users remove all of the offending program(s), so that part is fairly normal. You have to trust tech support, I know it can be awkward- I've been through it myself.

You may find that they cannot find what the problem is, and they want you to do a full Recovery, or clean install, of the operating system and then all the rest. If that comes up, make sure you first back up anything you cannot afford to lose, your documents, files, etc.

And, of course you can turn down the full reinstall for now. let us know what happens.

Regarding not being protected> Well, it's not the best way to operate but what choice do you have?

1. Use another computer if you can, that does have it's protection running.

2. Check the information in the link- about turning off security type programs, before installing SP3....I'd bet that is one of the reasons your install fails. Mention it to the tech support team> if you had them running when trying your installation before.

It wouldn't be so bad if my computer didn't take 25 times of rebooting to finally 'catch' and actually boot...... I think that's really part of my frustration. It's 45 minutes with tech support, reloading, whatever....; and 3 hours of resets to finally boot....... I have a feeling it's not talking to my router right..... When I go into event viewer, usually I get errors looking for DNS - but seems like it should work around the router and I should be able to boot anyway..... every time I boot.... it stays at the damn windows screen with the line going back & forth and every time, just a little further......... very very frustrating...unless there's something wrong on the NIC card end...... but everything checks out OK......

I'm actually a MS Office teacher - but internet/engineering stuff just doesn't cut it for me. I FINALLY got it booted affter 2 hours and now am running the AV scan - so I am anticipating an error right in the middle..... I need a good enginner over here every now & then to turn off all of this crap I don't need that's hosing this computer.

Just where does a person go for a level 2 experience person.... I don't need someone to uninstall, reload, whatever.... I need someone to go through this darn registry and get rid of junk..... that actually knows what they're doing....... hard finding "good help" ya know?
