devagral try uninstalling spybot first.

Thanks, speed_hog.Do you mean that I should uninstall it and then reinstall it by downloading it again? For the time being, I have restored back to a point prior to updation and Excel files started responding. Then I again updated spybot search and destroy and again Exel files stopped responding and I had to restore back again. So surely spybot is the culprit.

Thanks for doing that test and letting everyone know about the problem.
I use spybot and don't have excel installed so I don't have your problem.

What is your version of Excel? I use 2000 and have no problem with an interaction with Spybot.
