With regret, we have to announce that update support for dated versions of Spybot-S&D is going to end.

Fighting malware is a task that constantly requires new approaches. Some of these, we will make available through updated versions of tool libraries or plugins, but some make updates of the full software necessary. For those interested in a detailed technical background, see the OpenSBI wiki, which shows some of the changes in structure.

Users with very old hardware, and users of Windows 95 who could not use Spybot-S&D 1.4, chose to stay with very old versions of the software, and we tried to accommodate them by still offering them the updates, with the limitation that Spybot-S&D would complain about a lot of incompatible detection patterns and results would have to be used with extra care.

While we regarded that as a service for the aforementioned group of users, using current detection patterns in old software versions is getting too dangerous if that extra care is not applied, which we simply cannot expect from every user. We therefore decided to restrict updates to the current software version, and during version switches, as has recently happened with the switch to 1.6, the last version for a short while.

If you have any serious reasons for not upating to 1.6, let us know on the forum!

I knew this eventually would happen and after M$ dropped support for 98/ME, I started archiving the updates to Spybot and Ad-Aware SE.

If you have any serious reasons for not upating to 1.6, let us know on the forum!

Yes, Spybot 1.6 wouldn't likely run too well on Windows 95's minimum specs of 33MHz/4MB RAM. Spybot 1.3 barely runs well. Takes about 8 hours to do a scan on my '96 Gateway 2000 P3C (120MHz/40MB RAM).I usually run the scan once monthly before I take my nightly dirt nap, only necessary if I run Mozilla Firefox with Javascript enabled. I use IE 3.02 and because Java/ActiveX/phots are blocked out, it's not necessary with IE, only FF.

I applaud Spybot's support for Windows 95, but it should be considered that it is really only supported if old hardware is taken into account. Nobody runs Win95 on new hardware.

Darn your computer has got to be slower then slow. My IBM Aptiva was 200MHz with 32 MB and a 2 MB video card and had 95a on it.
But I only had norton AV on it back then and later the first Zone Alarm and then later SpywareBlaster. But there was not as much bad things around like today either.

I can do a Spybot scan a whole lot faster then 8 hours.
Even faster if I disable the hosts file and rename the firefox bookmarks so it will not scan them because that is what takes up most of the scan time. I did a scan in less then 10 min's on my new computer with XP. My other computer with 98SE it scans a little faster and it's a slower computer so there is more things it scans on XP that take more time.

I have removed the links from your signature and your post. If vendors are no longer supporting older versions of programs and offering updates then they are not available period. I am sure they wouldn't approve of them being offered by third parties or being posted on web sites and we certainly don't condone this activity.
