hi

there are programs (eg PC Detective OR pc spy) that claim they will run invisibly in the background. They claim that they will send monitoring information back to another computer.

the question is, how can I tell if someone put this on my machine? and if so, how can I get rid of it?

.. and before I do, how can I tell what information was sent?

All programs like those you said need to start up somehow. And running HijackThis might reveal them. Available here:

These programs usually capture your keystrokes. So anything you type in MS Word or MSN for instance will be recorded.

Most programs of that type won't show in Task Manager or HJT. But many anti-virus and anti-malware scanners will pick up enough pieces to be able to alert you to their presence.

The best way to find them is to scan your drive when Windows is not running and no drivers for hiding files are loaded.

I was trying to avoid that word, but you hit the nail on the head. It is really only the bad guys that get that designation, but there are certainly many legit programs that come so close that you'd have to call it a "rootkit" in that it loads drivers that later affect the kernel of the operating system. Anti-malware and anti-virus programs that protect on boot are examples. But most programs that hide things simply load drivers later in the boot process, so they aren't exactly "rootkits".
