Solved: Antivirus program that will run on Win 98
My wife works for a not-for-profit educational firm that is (of course) always cash-strapped. They have several computers still running Win 98. Just this week, they installed Verizon DSL to replace (can you believe) their dial-up connections. Now, their computers are always connected to the Web. Although Verizon has pretty good protection around their servers, I still think they should have AV/AS software on the computers, but I cannot find any AV/AS software, free or otherwise, that will run on Win 98.

Anybody know of an AV and/or AS software that still runs (and is updatable) on Win 98?

I dont know of any Windows 95 Anti-Virus software, but you could always use Linux on the computers instead, as Linux will run on older computers and there are a lot of great Anti-Virus programs for Linux.

Apparently, BitDefender version 10 also works with older versions of Windows; http://www.filehippo.com/download_bitdefender/tech/

I don't have any knowledge of this program myself, but its version 11 did reasonably well in the AV Comparatives August 2008 tests; http://www.av-comparatives.org/seite...se_2008_08.php

Problem there is that you can't buy ver. 10. You can only buy BitDefender 2009, and it requires Win XP or Vista.

The owner of the business has used and likes AVAST, and since AVAST continues to support Win 98, I think she's going with that. There's no way of knowing how long they will continue doing that, but when you're strapped for cash, it at least puts off having to upgrade the OS for probably another year.

My thanks to all, especially blue-harp28, for taking the time to respond. I will mark this thread as solved.

The BitDefender version 10 on FileHippo is a free one and is stated to work with Windows 9x which, I understand, includes 98, but perhaps I'm wrong..

I found it, and you're not wrong; people from the "Mother Country" seldom are. Most of the links you get from Google on "BitDefender" take you to pages that mention NOTHING about ver. 10. Naturally, they want you to buy the non-free version. Thanks for the tip.
