corrupt file recovery

Corrupt file message comes asking me to run checkdisk. The drive in which windows xp installed (file system) is NTFS. I tried to rectify the file with check disk that has come with windows, it says because it is ntsf it can not open and I tried other softwares but none worked. Please suggest a way out or a free software to rectify.
