Recomend protection software
So the other day I got hit with some malware and ended up reformatting my hd. I would have avoided the problem if I had some protection software. So I am looking for some recomendations on a program/s to buy for virus & spyware/malware protection. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What hrlow2 posted is also all free.
But also use Firefox with NoScript, get a good hosts file and keep it updated and get a router will all help.
