Hardware Firewall
I am thinking about buying a netgear firewall to add to my network. Mostly just to learn how to use one.
Where does a firewall fit in? Lets say my ISP connection, then what? Router-then firewall? Or firewall then router? This one is also a switch, so my gut tells me this firewall sits between my machines and the router.

i think the firewall is firmware in the router. i use a netgear router and have the windows firewall on as well. i did have the agv firewall on instead of the windows one but i think it's a bit on the aggressive side and snarled things up a bit.

Which netgear model are you looking at ? Some of them are also routers and would determine where you place it.

Also take a look at DLink, they make some firewall devices too.

As you go up in price, you will find more features like built in antivirus ( which you have to subscribe for signature updates ) , and VLAN support. Also take a look at CheckPoint's Safe@Office and SonicWall.

my router is a netgear super-g...dg834gt. i'm sure other routers are good, too, but i needed 1 with one external aerial, so that i can use it's female bit to link a much larger areial to the router. i beam my broadband to a neighbour 120 ft away...and to my office outside office 20 feet away.
