Question Solved: Does anyone know how Secunia works?
I've been using Securia for a while now and I've come across a problem in Adobe Flash Player, the results are below. I thought I had uninstalled and reinstalled the updated version of this program,a while back, but apparently I didn't. I really don't understand this at all, is there anyone that out there that's familiar with Securia that can help me figure this problem out?

Results on Securia:

When did you run that scan? This is what mine shows;

"Adobe Flash Player 10.x is up-to-date. The detected version installed on your system is 10.0.12.36, which either corresponds to or is newer than the latest secure version released by the vendor.

Installed on Your System in:
C:\windows\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash10a.ocx
Adobe Flash Player 10.x 10.0.12.36

Adobe Flash Player 10.x is up-to-date. The detected version installed on your system is 10.0.12.36, which either corresponds to or is newer than the latest secure version released by the vendor.

Installed on Your System in:
C:\Program Files\Opera\program\plugins\NPSWF32.dll"

The latest version of the Flash plugin was a security update to fix a fairly serious exploit so you should upgrade as soon as possible. I have two versions because I got the non Active X plugin for my Opera browser as I only use IE for updates.

To uninstall and reinstall flash again there is a special uninstaller that you should use, and you can get it here;

Uninstaller; http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...4157&sliceId=1 (read the instructions, IE users may need to reboot after running it)

Flash plugin for IE; http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...x/English.html
(read the installation instructions, you may need to be online for the install to complete properly)

If you have other browsers installed, such as Firefox, Opera, Netscape etc., you will also need the new plugin for them, because the uninstaller will have removed it;

Flash plugin for non Active X browsers; http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

I ran the scan this morning. IE7 is my only browser, I downloaded the uninstaller ran it, and restarted my computer, then ran the Secunia again with the results below. What should I do now?

The only thing I can think of is that you are using the Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (which is installed on your computer and must be updated) whereas I am using the Online Inspector (OSI), which is on the Secunia site and so is automatically up to date.

Have a look at the Secunia site and use the Online option and see what results you get (you will need an up to date version of Sun Java on your computer for this to work so, if you don't have it, you should get a message to that effect); http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/ I can provide a link to Sun Java if you need it.

PS. I notice you said you ran the uninstaller. Did you then download the Plugin for IE from the link I provided? If not, you currently shouldn't have any version of Flash installed.

Yes, I'm using the online Inspector up to date version of Secunia also. I have Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x 6.0.70.6

Yes I ran the uninstaller but didn't download the Plugin for IE. I guess I should do that hun,lol

I just ran the Scan again and and I have the new Adobe Flashplayer but still have to old versions still on here and here's the results for that scan;

Apple QuickTime 7.x 7.55.90.70

Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x 6.0.70.6

I'm thinking that the uninstaller would have removed these two programs but didn't, I ran it 3 times and theres still two on there........... Any ideas how I get them off my computer? cause there not in Add and Remove.

It's always best to stay safe..................

Hi Lori,

Long time no see. Hey your profile still has you living in Indiana and did you not move to FL.

I got XP but think even 98 now is the same and the flash is just installed in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
Not like it used to be where the IE flash was installed there and the NPSWF32.dll got installed it the plugin folder of netscape, firefox, thunderbird etc.
You only need one NPSWF32.dll file. The older versions installed the NPSWF32.dll all over the place like I said but they changed that about a year or so back. So if you never ran the flash uninstaller then do so and reboot. Then do a search on NPSWF32.dll because you may have it in other places and you can just delete it because the uninstaller may not find the older NPSWF32.dll versions.

Also I got the standalone flash installers because they work better and with IE it was the only way I could install the flash. I had no trouble doing the online install of flash in firefox.

I had Secunia tell me of older 4.x flash on my new dell that dell had installed so I just deleted the files it pointed to to clear that up.
Secunia also pointed to older versions of Sun Java I had.
To clean that up I ran JavaRa and it cleared all the older version of flash of the computer and out of the register for me.

Download the Flash Player Uninstall program to remove Flash

Flash Player 10.0.12.36 (Complete Standalone Installer) for Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape

Flash Player 10.0.12.36 (Complete Standalone Installer) for Internet Explorer.

Did you see the part in the uninstaller instructions about IE users needing to reboot after using the uninstaller in case some flash items were still in use? I assume that is something to do before attempting to install the new plugin. Read the instructions again and, if you didn't follow them before, think about running the uninstaller again including the reboot etc.

I once had an old and new version of flash showing up on a Secunia scan bur I can't now remember how I got rid of the old one. Adobe Flash plugin does show up in my Add/Remove list and I think Secunia was reading an 'empty' entry (the program itself having gone) and that was giving me the warning.

I may have used this program to remove the unwanted Add/Remove entry; http://www.revouninstaller.com/ Have a look at it and see what you think. If you decide to try it, make sure that you read all the instructions carefully as this program can amend your Registry if you aren't paying full attention to its settings. I only use it with the 'Safe' or 'Moderate' function.
