Cool secunia spots old Java
Re: Windows xp: A Secunia PSI scan turned up 3 previous versions of Sun Java's JRE 1.5. Do I need to uninstall these vulnerable versions? If so, how?

Updating Java
  • First uninstall the old versions through Add/Remove Programs:
  • Press the windows key and the R key at the same time
(The windows key is usually located two to the left of the space bar and is labeled with a windows logo)
  • A dialog box will Open. Type appwiz.cpl and press enter
  • This will take you to Add/Remove Programs
(Optionally you can locate Add/Remove Programs through the control panel)
  • Locate and uninstall all versions of java on your computer. Below are some examples of what these entries will look like:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
  • You uninstall by selecting the program and then clicking the button labeled Remove or Uninstall
  • After the old versions are uninstalled, download and install the newest version:
  • Download the latest version of Java from here.

I had the same thing happen. But I used JavaRa to clean up the older vserions and it also cleans up the registry. Worked great.

NOTE: JavaRa is ON HOLD.

Quote:
This project is currently on hold.

Paul does not have the time to further develop JavaRa and until someone has been found to work on this (or when Paul has time again), the program won't be updated.

You can of course keep using it, but it will only remove versions older than Java 6 Update 7.
You can remove Java 6 Update 7 from Add/Remove programs as i instructed above after using JavaRa to remove everything else.

The newest version is JRE 6 Update 10
