Try Sunbelt Personal Firewall. Click on "Download Free Trial" and you get the full version for 30 days. After that you lose a couple of features and it becomes the free version.
It seems to be easier on resources than Comodo or Zone Alarm and it's easier to configure. | | Distinguished Member with 4,638 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Kawartha Lakes Experience: always learning | | Keep it simple & just use the Windows XP firewall, nothing wrong with that. Not aware of any websites that do a firewall comparisons. If you are behind a router then you already have a good firewall.Or you could give this a try. http://www.eeye.com/html/products/blink/index.html
It has a great firewall,it's what I use, free for a year, or was when I got it. | | Distinguished Member with 4,901 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2002 Location: Birmingham, England | | Some tests have been carried out by Matousec but I have no idea what reliance, if any, can be placed on this, or any other, testing site; http://www.matousec.com/projects/fir...ge/results.php
I am, coincidentally, using their top rated free firewall (Comodo), but not because of anything they say. I just tried it and liked it!

Not the newest version.I use version 2.4. PCTools has a good freebie also. | | Registered User with 722 posts. | | | | I am using both the paid and the free version of Online Armor. The paid version includes a keylogger and a secure mode for banksite logins. However, I turned the latter off, so it ends up the same about as the free one.
I tried Comodo right when they went to version 3 and it garbled up my Vista laptop badly because it was buggy in the initial release. I hear it's fixed now, but they only had one chance to impress me and they didn't.
As for XP as a firewall, yes it will block unwanted incoming data, but won't do nothing if you have a program sending out data. Comodo and Online Armor will notify you, but it's still up to you to say yes or no. | | Senior Member with 279 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2001 Location: Hawaii | | PCTools Firewall is free, effective, stable, well-supported.
Another good one for XP is Kerio 2.1.5 -- a golden oldie but still very effective. | | Distinguished Member with 3,730 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Experience: Intermediate | | firewall i also use comodo free firewall ,it does a nice job and you can't beat the price. | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun | | I use the paid version of Online Armor and it does a great job. Free version is rated right up there with the paid version too.
I see PCTools Firewall is not rated to bad but don't know if I would trust going with there software. I have gotten free software from them in the pass that stops working and then keeps asking you to register it but will not let you or lets you but parts are disabled because it will not work right and they want you to buy the paid version. | | Account Disabled with 332 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Experience: intermediate to advanced |

And clarify what "the best" means?
I have seen no evidence to date other than acedotal, that registry cleaners perform any useful function other than keep techies employed, fixing what gets broken. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
