 | Member with 79 posts. | | | | Need Anti-Virus Recommendations My laptop came with a trial of Norton Internet Security and even though I purchased a full version of Norton Internet Security along with my laptop, I don't wish to install it as it slowed my old computer down DRASTICALLY. (I installed it on my old computer because I decided I wouldn't install the full version until the trial ran out)
I heard Kaspersky was really good so I purchased the most recent version online, but I encountered a problem. When I went to install it, it 'suggested' that I uninstall Spybot S&D and Spyware Doctor. Since I have been using these programs for a LONG time and I was totally loyal to them, I declined the uninstall...but it uninstalled them anyway.
Needless to say that was money wasted.
Before Norton, I used McAfee on my old computer and it was very good. Should I purchase the newest version of McAfee or is there a better anti-virus out there?
Thanks in advance. | | Distinguished Member with 2,827 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Nebraska Experience: Intermediate | | Personally, I use AVG 8.0 (free) antivirus. On an older 98SE computer I have avast. Good luck with both.

Kaspersky and NOD32 are about the best you can get and most reliable at detection. | | Junior Member with 3 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2008 Experience: Advanced USER - not GEEK | | RE: Anti-virus software recommendations Vicks,
I have free CA Internet Security package from my cable ISP (Time Warner/RoadRunner). Recently I discovered them to be quite useless with Trojans, which were detected and -- partly -- removed by the free AVG 8 (this will be another question -- in the malware removal section.)
I want to replace CA Anti-virus with AVG 8 Free edition, but it doesn't have Firewall. Is there any good free firewall software you could recommend to be effective AND compatible with AVG 8
Thanks,

The outfit producing TAV is Filseclab. They have been around for several years. Until a couple of years ago, their main security product was Filseclab Firewall - well-known on most security forums. As of now it seems that Filseclab is placing primary effort on TAV.
TAV offers a 90-day free trial of a full version. The license costs $29.95 & is perpetual.
After I completed about 80 days of trialing TAV, I decided to buy a license. I now have TAV running in real-time. I also have a paid license for Avira Premium, which I use on-demand.
TAV has a small footprint, and is very light on cpu, as well. I switched from real-time Avira to real-time TAV because my computer feels extremely more peppy using TAV.
In addition to the *usual* sort of AV scanner, heuristics engine, & signatures, TAV also has...
+++ A built-in, configurable behavior-blocker module called "Filseclab Dynamic Defense System" (FDDS).
+++ A registry protection module
TAV updates automatically, if desired -- usually 3 or 4 times daily, & never less than twice per day so far. I like the fact that the auto updater involves zero overhead -- i.e., it doesn't load or run when not actually doing an update.
When I configured TAV to its most aggressive settings, it yielded a goodly number of False Positives (FPs). TAV's GUI makes it VERY easy to submit FPs to Filseclab, & they usually corrected the ones I sent them within 2-3 days. Even so, after a week of this I backed off a bit to less aggressive settings.
As is true for any antivirus, you should give TAV a good long trial before deciding. | | Distinguished Member with 2,827 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Nebraska Experience: Intermediate | | Stanny
Welcome to TSG.
You really need to start your own thread,
I will answer your question for you however.
I use the Zone Labs Zone Alarm firewall. I also suggest using a couple of anti spyware programs: Spybot search and destroy and Ad-aware (lavasoft).
All of these are available at the above mentioned sites.
I believe it is good to protect your own computer even if your ISP is supposed to have the protection.
Good luck

But, the important thing is you need to update it frequanly so its virus database is up to date so it can defence against new virus. thats the point, all antivirus software need update so it can protect your PC.
Good luck.

vicks | Thanks. I have and run already Spybot and Ad-aware. None of them, neither Spyware Doctor, detected trojans discovered by AVG (;'-))
I used long time ago ZoneAlarm, and had different problems (don't remember details...)
I definitely will start another thread in the malware removal section. | | Distinguished Member with 2,476 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: West"By God" Virginia Experience: continuing to learn. |

#11 | I personally stay away from Norton products. They are notorious resource hogs. Use everything they can get and is difficult to remove if needed. Try Avira AntiVir,Comodo Firewall,SuperAntiSpyware,MalwareBytes, and ThreatFire. Good all-around security. | | Junior Member with 10 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2008 Experience: Advanced |

#12 | Get Kaspersky! seriously..even though it's a tad expensive..however,if you're looking for something for free,go for AVG or Malware bytes as a malware removal tool, and always have windows defender enabled and you'll be fine :P | | Distinguished Member with 2,476 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: West"By God" Virginia Experience: continuing to learn. |

#15 | Not sure what version of NIS you have - but the new NIS2009 is very much improved and uses very little resources. That is the big improvement over earlier versions.
