Need Opinions on Something (Housecall and Avast Question)
I run Avast AV 4.8 Home Edition and also do monthly to bi-monthly on-line scans with Trend Micro's Housecall. I know it is not good to have two INSTALLED AV programs on at the same time. However, I have always kept my AV program (Avast) enabled while using the Housecall On-Line scanner without any problems or issues that I can recall. Is this still a good idea or should I disable Avast when I do an on-line Houscall scan?

Thanks.

Doesn't really matter, you can leave Avast enabled for an online scanner.

avst is good enough alone, i use 2 however. avast home and comodo internet security(firewall and antivirus) they are great together. the reason usually 2 dont work together is because the on access interfere but for me i have no problems. dont use online scanners, its not secure

Just so you know, most of the badly infected pc's I clean have Avast onboard so personally I don't think it is more than slightly better than nothing at all.

Cosign! Everyone should get the update. You can keep your original settings intact. Just right-click on the Avast Ball in your System Tray and select Updating, than Program Update. (XP/Vista Users, should create a System Restore point first.) I have noticed improvements across the board with this update.

OK and what improvements are those? How can you tell it will better prevent virus and trojans that until now it has not caught?

Features are not how I measure an antivirus. Does Avast now kill all the virus and Trojans it used to miss before this new version? I mean it has always had a great looking gui and I love the British voice that tells you what it is doing, but as New Yorkers used to say "that and a quarter will get you on the Staten Island Ferry." What an antivirus needs to do is repel spyware and virus these days, and this is where all 3 of those fall apart frankly. And why shouldn't they, do you work for nothing at your job? Why should good software code developers then? It takes money and development to make a product # 1, why don't so many of you understand that? It just isn't possible that a free product can do as good a job as a paid one, it is so damn illogical. The difference is usually a savvy user who has great surfing habits which my clients surely could use.

I recomend avast, comodo and avira. Primarily avast because on there sites i compared the fetures and tyes of infections they take casre of and AVG only virus and spyware, avast everything and avira virus and root kits. comodo does all of them too. mcafee and norton and those guys were good, before the new virus wave of 2008. they are too old school. viruses have advanced so you need a modern detection engine. eset is good also.

Yeah, i have heard NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best amongst paid ones. But i had NOD32 for sometime on my PC... and it didnt prevent me from virus. So i had to get rid of it.
I am using Avast since a few months, and i am very happy with it.

yes i like avast, it is making a big comeback against AVG. everyone go to the avast, avira and avg site and compare them, avast protects you from the most. then avira and avg the worst. i dont like the paid suites. make your own free one. paid are bloatware that dont protect you for lots of cash and slow down you pc
