Transitioning from Security Suite to a la carte programs?
Greetings.

Hearing nasty things about Norton 360, etc., I'm getting ready to abandon the comfort of the Norton Internet Security suite package.

Based on other posts, I'm leaning toward Comodo firewall and ESET Nod32 antivirus. I've got all the lovely anti-spyware: Spybot, AdAware, Spyguard, hosts file.

Is there anything else I should add to the mix? Any functions I'm missing (i.e. anything besides firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware) Thanks!

Yes, two very good choices, I would go with both of those.

You can keep Spybot and AdAware, but they're not as effective as they used to be. Try Superantispyware or Malewarebytes, it's OK to have several Anti-spyware scanners.

You mentioned "Spyguard". If you meant SpywareGuard by Javacool Software then it's OK, but it's better to use SpywareBlaster by Javacool.

However "The SpyGuard" is a rogue anti-spyware program and should be removed, more info here: http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm.

I stand corrected. Yes, I'm using the 2 you mentioned, both from Javacool.

I'm also using NOD32 and the Comodo firewall (which we have to call CIS now, but you can opt to only install the firewall).

To get the best from the firewall you need to have it on the 'Proactive security' configuration (which is the setting used when it got its 90% score in the latest Matousec tests; http://www.matousec.com/projects/fir...ge/results.php.) I also remember reading somewhere that you need to have Defense+ enabled, but I can't now remember where I saw that!.

In addition to the above, I also use Comodo BO Clean. The publicity for this suggests that it can stop just about everything but I have no idea if the claims are justified because it has never reacted to anything since I installed it! It updates daily and doesn't appear to slow me down so I keep it. Details here; http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html
