Question Solved: Windows ME - Security Software
Dear Friends,

The sister of a friend of mine has recently died and he has inherited her computer, with ME as the O.S. and only 128 M.B. of memory. He himself is 52 years old and has never used a computer before and I am trying to help him, although I have little technical knowledge myself. Another friend has connected him to the Internet using a wireless hub (B.T. in the U.K.) but the P.C. had no "security" software at all.

The difficulty I am having is finding free security software which will work with ME, I have installed Avast anti-virus, although I note support is to be withdrawn at the end of 2009. Other software which I use on my own computer such as AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware and the Zone Alarm firewall do not appear to run on ME.

I wonder please whether any kind person using ME knows of any free security software which can be installed and used with the operating system.

Thank you for reading this,

Red Cloud

This is a tough question as most products are not compatible with ME.
I definitely would have said Avast right off the bat.
I was looking into NOD32, but their system requirements are vague:

Quote:
System requirements for NOD32 productsCPU 386 or higher (Pentium recommended)
30 MB available disk space
32 MB RAM (depending on OS)
VGA or better graphic card
Note: Full functionality requires Winsock 2.0 minimum, graphic card with 64k color resolution and Internet Explorer 4.0.

Sorry to say this but ME is the worst OS ever. Get rid of it and get XP Pro and you'll avoid a whole lot of problems. And, of course, get more memory.

Smile Windows ME - Security Software
Dear Golfer Bob,

Thank you so much for your reply, the Sygate Firewall looks very promising.

I am going to mark this thread as solved as I believe that with Avast and Sygate that is as good as my friend is going to get with ME as his operating system. If I can get him comfortable using a P.C. then I think there is a good chance I can persuade him to buy a new system as mentioned in a previous post !!

Regards,

Red Cloud
