My brother told me I could download AOL and they have a free virus program, but when I went on the site and downloaded the software something came up saying it would cost so much money. I must have done something wrong. I am now without any virus program. Also what is a good spyware program? | | Account Disabled with 2,239 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2003 Location: Quebec, Canada Experience: Getting there... | | Forgive me for this comment but when security is an issue, why bother with free antivirus software? What's a meager 40, 50 or 60$ a year for a good antivirus. Go with the best, either NOD32 or Kaspersky.
As for free spyware software, go with SuperAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster. | | Distinguished Member with 5,580 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: Canada Experience: Intermediate | | Quote:

In my opinion, it's not for beginners. You'll have plenty of pop-ups and questions to answer believe me. You'll probably not have the slightest idea what to answer!
I like it simple. I use ESET Smart Security (with NOD32 antivirus) and its firewall passed every free tests I've done on the Internet. Very few annoying questions are ever asked and it works in the background effectively without draining your system ressources. When installing a new program, just put the firewall in automatic so it won't ask questions about the program wanting to access the Internet. After installing your program, just put back your firewall in interactive mode for more security.
What can I say, I'm sold to ESET. It works so great for me! | | Account Disabled with 2,239 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2003 Location: Quebec, Canada Experience: Getting there... |

#10 | Perfume,
I see you have SuperAntiSpyware Pro. I have the free version without Real-Time protection. I have a question. In conjunction with your antivirus and firewall, do you use the Real-Time feature? It must slow down your system considerably to have all those programs working in the background at the same time. | | Member with 36 posts. | | Join Date: Mar 2006 Experience: little better than beginn |

#11 | free virus protection I did end up installing the free Avast program, but don't understand it completely . It has a Virus recovery database. I don't know what that is and also evertime I do a scan and look at the log viewer, there isn't anything there to show I did a scan. Am I doing it incorrectly. What else should I put on for protection such as spyware and such?
Thanks,

#13 | For scanning by Avast... right click on the Avast icon in the system tray, click on Start Avast Antivirus.. this will bring up the Avast interface. It has a media player like interface. Click on the icon which looks like a hard disk. Here you can set if you want a quick, standard or thorough scan, and also if you want to scan archive files too. This will apply to scanning of all local non-removable disks.
Once that is done, you can click on the play like button, on the left to start scanning. The scan will start and you will see it running.
Additionally, if you want some other media or place to select, you can choose the icon below hard disk... and also the last one, shaped like an open folder.. to select what other areas you want to select.
Hope this helps.

#14 | ok lol firsaof all its an ANTI virus program, but anyway, i have tryed them all and i say avast is best then avira, then comodo antivirus, then avg. try comodo and avast, they are great, better than all payed as hrlow2 said earlier
Barrbarren, i have used avast for a long time, ask me if you need help. as for the ui, try this theme-easier to understand
-right click on icon and press start press the open button on the upper left corner
-press select more skins from online
-select avist and download it
-understand that simply clicking on the blue a button by the clock opens the automatic scanner. to get to the on demand scanner, right click and hit start avast antivirus
-click program setting in right click menu, and go to update, put them both on automatic
- also ill teach you about the ui. for avist theme
-to start a scan press local disks, slide the bar to thourough scan and press the scan archive bubble, hit the folders button and select them all, and if you want to scan a usb or cd or whatever click on removable button. then press play.
-you also see the virus chest. this hold quarintined items in it, leave them in it unless they are false positives, but be sure first. they were all viruses etc on your system at one point, now its taken care of.
- you see resident scanner, switch it to high
-ok now right click on the a button by the clock. go to VRDB (Virus Recovery Data Base) it creates a system backup incase of a virus infection. run this weekly
-THIS FEATURE IS ONLY ON AVAST NOT OTHERS- when you firust downloaded it it should have asked you to do a boot time scan- you should do it, its great! if you want to schedule one open the on demand control thing, click settings and schedule boot time scan.
If you or anyone else have any questions, please ask me
