Help with conflicting reports from Anti-Spy-ware
I hope I'm posting in thr right section and apologise if not!

I’m looking for a good, reliable, and trustworthy Anti-spyware/Anti-Trojan program (or programs) but am tired of trying various ones that don’t give me any confidence in what they tell me. I do realise that no single program will find all the threats but I’d like your opinions as to which is the best.

I’ve tried “StopZilla” (the free un-registered version), which drives me up the wall because it keeps reporting bad cookies and other software that others don’t, and which I have definitely, but definitely, deleted. Last night, it told me that I had 7 infections while this morning I have, apparently, 24! What’s my switched-off, and unplugged computer been doing overnight? “StopZilla” won’t remove any threats until I’ve bought the software, so, I deleted all the cookies it mentioned (about 7) via “Settings” and “Control Panel” then re-booted and it found exactly the same ones.

Also, when “StopZilla” is running, my computer slows right down- in fact it almost freezes, so I have to turn it off when I’m doing any work - but I’m told that “StopZilla” is good.

“Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware” program, on the other hand, tells me that my computer is totally free of infections.

“StopSign” tells me I have a few infections but not the same ones as found by “StopZilla!” (the original 7, that is), which, by the way has reported that “StopSign” is so bad that I should delete it, which I have, in an attempt to narrow down the problem.

“Spyware Doctor” found 3 infections, as did Lavasoft’s “Ad-Aware 2008”, but these infections were, as far as I could see, not the same. As a matter of interest, "Spyware Doctor" also slows my computer right down.

“SuperAnti-Spyware” found nothing.

Okay, I’m trying out, where I can, the free versions (with the intention of buying the best) but none of the trial versions gives me any confidence that what they’ve “found” are genuine bad threats, so why should I buy the full version? I’m quite happy to buy the right one (or ones!) but which should I buy? Which can I trust?

I would appreciate some help, please, because I don’t know whether I have any infections or not and I don’t want to pass any on if I have. I’ve got a lot of work to do and this all started when I visited C/Net and downloaded a “WinRAR” program to try and found I had the “Intervalhehehe” Trojan (or whatever) I’m not blaming C/Net as this might just be co-incidence but it worries me.

I've tried HijackThis but don't understand what it's telling me. Sorry about my ignorance.

My OS is XP Pro.

Sorry about the long post! Please help – I’m getting desperate!!!

Regards to all
