Cool slow connection
Hi Guys

can you guys help me. I am having trouble with my laptop connection to the internet. I know that its the laptop because my partners is working fine. Sometimes its up to speed then other times its slow. My ISP is downloading at 2040kbs, but my laptop is downloading at 400 ish kbs when its playing up. Do you think there is a virus? I have Avast on there. It seems to be ok when I start it up from shutting down but if Hibernate it and start it up again becomes really slow. Have removed a lot of the programes that i dont use, my windows update are up to date. Also have cleaned up the disk and defraged, and also cleaned the registry. Using Mozilla as my Browser. This problem is driving me mad. Have just changed Internet providers, but as i said my partners laptop is fine, her download speed is coming in at 1750kbs ish,,

regards,

Steve

Welcome to TSG:
If you have run your antivirus/antispyware and done all the disc maintenance, cut down running programs, make sure that you have also cleaned out your temp files and browser cache.
The only other things I can think of at the moment is try using another browser and go to your laptop manufacturers web site and see if they have a more current driver for your network adapter,This fixes quite a few "slowness issues"
Also another thought,if you are connected wirelessly,if possible hardwire directly to the modem/router to see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried another browser(ie)?
About the only other things I can think of are:
When "slow",take a look at task manager and see if a process appears to be using a high % of resources.Idle task high is OK.
Coming out of hibernation means,I believe, that all taks that were running are running again.
Start up just starts those tasks in the startup list and system tasks that set to run auto.

task master: ctrl/alt/delete

Also,if you feel that there may be malware, etc causing the slowdown, the folks who are qualified to look at your HJT are on the Malware removal/hj t forum.

This is for XP as I do not run Vista:
Any task that is consistently taking up a high % of the system.Take that reading a # of times through "slowness"to see if the same task(s) seem high.Remember,Idle task will always be high(90% +) in a normal environment.
Just to practice,I would do this at normal times so you can get a feel for the tasks that are running and what the #'s look like. And a side benefit is that you will become familiar with the task manager and the info that is there.
I am not qualified to read your HJT(and it is at normal time). And as I have said, only the Gold Shield techs have that training.
Another thought:When slow, run another HJT and compare it to this one(save this one for comparison). You may be able to identify some task that may be your culprit.
Identifying the causes of poor response sometimes requires the gathering of quite a bit of info.
Hopefully ,looking at the info that you will have, someone here at TSG will be able quickly give suggestions as to the probable cause of the problem.
