AVG "Free"
I always felt that the personal use version (free version) of AVG anti-virus was great until recently. I needed a version for a newer computer so I downloaded version 8.xx and found that there were many new "strings" attached such as monitoring who I was and where I visited, etc. I felt uncomfortable giving out personal information and allowing intrusions into my privacy.
My question is this - is there a slightly older version of the product that I can download, update, and use with little or no spying?

Well this is what I found from there EULA.

Quote:
b. Privacy

(i)You acknowledge that AVG Technologies collects certain information regarding the users of the Software, including certain personally identifiable information.

(ii)THE TOOLBAR MAY COMMUNICATE CERTAIN BASIC USAGE INFORMATION TO VISICOM MEDIA INC. VIA (“APPLICATIONSTAT.COM”) TO HELP VISICOM COMPILE GLOBAL STATISTICS CONCERNING USAGE OF THE TOOLBAR BY USERS (for example concerning the number of installations and unique users, the number of clicks which the Toolbar receives, the number of searches performed by users, etc.). Such statistical information will not include any personally identifiable information regarding users.
As far as I can tell this information is only to collect statistics. As for the "certain information", I can only see that as being your computers info.

Still if you do not like them getting that stuff, try Avast!.

Don't we all know that Microsoft(iam citing only as an example) tracks every website you visit and other info' you would otherwise not part with!SuperAntiSpyware Pro(SAS PRO) which i run everyday, first thing in the morning, shows up with tracking cookies which can only be removed by rebooting.Who gave any organization any right to collect and possibly collate data regarding a person's activities.I personally have strong opinions on such issues. It's like having a federal agent monitoring your every action, however innocent it maybe! As long as you are browsing, info'about you is being collected!.AVG is Excellent!Have no fear,my dear, you are already under the spyglass!Period.

I am still using AVG 7.5 on one PC and it is still able to get updates but they have to be done manually. Support was supposed to stop last June, but they extended it to November 1, and it hasn't been killed yet. Maybe on New Years Day?

You can download the loader for 7.5 at File Hippo. I cannot vouch for its integrity as I got my version from Grisoft.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/4029/

However, the AVG downloads have always been just installers. They go to Grisoft to download the actual program, so I don't know if the above is still supported.

If you try it, let us know if it works.

And as a side note, Avast seems to work nicely and will be my option when AVG support stops. I hear AVG 8.0 is gotten too big and tries to do too much for its own good..
