My Internet randomly crashes every 1 or 2 hours. Please Help.
I wasn't sure wether to post this in this forum or the networking forum but I'm not entirely sure what the problem is.

Anyway I've come here because there's something that's been driving me through the wall the past couple of months and it's that my Internet seems to just randomly stop working every hour or two.

I'm with virgin media, just a 2Mbit connection (no complaints with speed) and I don't remember it doing this as much say 3 or 4 months ago, maybe occasionally it would stop working but this is so frequent now. What happens is I could just be looking at something online, I go to another page and I will get the "Page cannot be displayed/connection could not be estabished". The only fix is to turn EVERYTHING off, wait about 2 minutes, turn it all back on and it will work for another hour or two before repeating the process.

The strange thing is when it happens my modem is still showing a connection and my computer tells me I am connected to the internet...

I've had the same modem for years now, since Virgin Media took over from BTL. What on earth is the problem? I want to fix this since it's driving me insane was hoping you guys could help before I were to call up and go through the horrible process of dealing with Virgin Media tech support.

I really hope someone can help.

Other information: operating system is windows vista.

Check line from pole to house. Any trees or anything that can hit it in windy conditions?

I had this happen to me recently a few times until it just wouldn't connect anymore, the DSL light on the modem would never come on. It turned out to be the modem that had to replaced. I had that same modem for probably 6 or 7 years.

I wouldn't be sure where to look for the cables I like in a huge apartment block and my internet cable just goes into the wall.

The thing with my problem too is that old the lights remain on when my connection is lost and do not show any signs of actual disconnection but I get page load errors etc. I was thinking of finally doing a system restore - maybe it's a problem with my computer.

At next disconnect, please post up an ipconfig /all

Also,I would contact your service provider and ask them to run whatever tests they can on your connection.
If they are providing the modem,I might request a replacement.

it could be your modem is going bad, your internet provider is having problems or you have spyware or something on your computer. also, stay away from internet explorer. thats a huge issue for computer security problems.
