Question Notification of Vondo in " loop"
In early December, my computer sustained virus attack. In a naive panic I purchased removers, and cleaners, none of which worked. The folks were good enough to refund, once they saw I had Norton installed. Norton did quarantine 5 or so but wasn't able to do anything with Swobohuxewot.dll. I googled "dll" and came up with REGCURE, which I bought. It did speed up things but left the infected file. I deleted it and promptly lost the printer. Meanwhile, I came across you guys and spent some time just reading posts. On Thursday, REGCURE pulled periodic scan and afterwards there was the file back and the printer works now. However, the notification window is in loop and continually displays a new total at the rate of 1/sec or so. Rebooting did not make it go away. I suspect Vundo is still lurking about, but the system is running fine with only an infrequent ad showing up. Am I in trouble? The looping screen is annoying.

try this software, free and very good. MBAM v1.31

http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_A...are_d5756.html

Download install, update, quick scan.

This is a manual scanner, it will not run unless you tell it to, it will not update automatically unless you get the paid version, otherwise do it manually after launching the program.

Question Mumbodog
Thanks for the advice. I'm swamped with Christmas errands right now. I will follow your suggestion asap. You can see from my profile that I'm a beginner just rising out of illiteracy. I've been a user for 20 years but have always had IT support. It's great to fall into a network such as this. I will contribute. Will respond later.

Question Mumbodog
OK. I looked at the website for Malwarebytes. As it is a registry cleaner/booster,will it conflict with Regcure that I've got loaded. I'm a bit nervous about all these programs. Please be patient with my lack of skill and knowledge.

Actually no, its a malware scanner, it only looks for malware and viruses, then removes them at your command.

OK. I downloaded, updated and scanned. Report sez 12 threats and 181 infections. The bad one (high) is Trojan.FakeAlert (7 infections). Can I remove without buying the pctool? I notice also that I bought a rogue program. What's my next step? Thanks for your help.

Yes.

After the scan you can select to remove them, do so. Then do a second scan, let me know if there is anything MBAM cannot remove.

Ugh! I now have a different screen. it doesn't show the individual threats as the previous one did. This screen gives System Status with the 181 infections noted but nothing to remove that I can see. I will scan again.

OK Where is the button that initiates removal? I clicked "Fix checked" and got an offer to purchase. The only box other than cancel is "create restore point before removal??

Are you sure you downloaded the right program? Its called MBAM

Use this link to get the MBAM program, uninstall the other one if it is not mbam.

God, how the hell did you get caught up with 181 infections (probably a lot of harmless tracking cookies) and 12 threats!?!

Where was Norton in all this?

Either your antivirus isn't well configured or you should change it for another one.

Did you ever scan for spyware before?

Do you keep your Windows updated?

And, stay away from reg cleaners.

I would suggest you install SuperAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster also, and make regular scans. Also use common sense while surfing the Web. Be careful and read about Internet security.

You should also post a HJT log in this section: http://forums.techguy.org/54-malware...jackthis-logs/

Merry Christmas!

I'm back from Christmas. I uninstalled the other program, "Spyware Doctor or something, and successfully downloaded MBAM. It is scanning now. That other program came from MajorGeeks website, I think.????

OK. Scan is complete. Have 15 infections, 12 are rogue items from me earlier folly. Three are Trojan , two Agent and one Fake. Will remove, then run HJT log and answer some of Karbo's questions.
