Solved: Internet Explorer Patch
I am running IE6 on a Dell PC Windows XP Home.
I heard about the patch that has been released but it was not listed in my Windows Updates that I receive daily.

When I used the Update Tool I received the message that I needed to download the
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130).

I'm not sure why I am being asked to do this now since (the same) Windows has always been loaded in my computer.

Do I need to download that and do I need the patch or is that only for IE 7?

Thanks!

The out of band Internet Explorer patch is also needed by IE6.

If you have turned on automatic updates, then maybe it is already installed, as the default update time is 3am. View your installed update history to see if 960714 is there.

WGA is necessary to get updates via IE, so if yours is Not a pirated copy of Windows, it will do no harm to install it, these WGA tools are updated about twice a year, so you may see it again if you update using IE at a later date.

You can download the IE patch from here and install it manually, be sure to choose the correct IE version and Operating system you have.

I know that I've got Service Pack 2 but how do I know if I ever got Service Pack 3? In my updates that they keep wanting me to download there is an Office Service Pack 3 but that won't install because it doesn't recognize my version of Office (a long time issue).
Sorry for the dumb question but where is the update history?
Thanks!

Update history is in add remove programs list, tick the "show updates" box at the top.

You can easily see what SP level you are at by doing a properties on "My Computer" icon.

960714 was there - thank you!

I checked and I was on SP2.
Thanks for the link Bicycle Bill - that finally got me to the right place to download SP3. I kept only getting links to the Professional one.

I appreciate all of your responses! Every time something needs to be changed or added it's as though I am back at the beginning of learning to use a computer!
