Making a choice between AVG OR Kaspersky would anybody be able to give an opinion on which one is the better?

I think AVG and Kaspersky are both good. As far as Antivirus products go, you are always going to have an occasion where one catches a virus that the other misses.

A factor in my decision to use AVG Free is that I have 8 PCs at home. I cannot (would rather not) afford the annual fee for paid antivirus products.

AVG is good for a free program (although they've had some serious false positives recently) but between the two Kaspersky would definitely be the superior product.

I use Kaspersky and agree, its a great product, but it is a paid one as opposed to AVG's free one

I you're considering paying, don't overlook NOD32 (which includes anti spyware); http://www.eset.co.uk/products/products.php

I gather that the Eset Smart Security suite, which includes a firewall, doesn't do too well (at least its firewall doesn't) ; http://www.matousec.com/projects/fir...ge/results.php
