Security Expertise Required HELP PLEASE!
Hello,

I am trying to run a program on my computer that requires access back and forth from a server. Its basically a program that feeds live data into my system. Unfortunately I get a cannot connect to server error everytime I try to start it. I have a laptop on wireless conenction using the same router that is able to conenct with no problem. The laptop that can connect is xp 32 bit OS. They computer im trying is Vista 32 bit OS. After being on the phone for 2 hours with the tech support we could not locate the reason it could not connect. The Vista system has a fresh install of the OS ( I just custom built it). There was barely any programs on the system that could have prevented acces to the server.

I tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling (after cleaining out all traces from the registry), to disabling the firewall (Vista Firewall) and/or adding an exception to the program, to preventing startup of programs and services using msconfig. At the end of it all i decided to fall back to Windows XP 64 bit ( I have 64 bit hardware). After a fresh install of XP I still had the same problem. After installing only a few programs such as java and firefox, I tried the program and still no cigar.

I dont know of any other settings that would be preventing this program from connecting. Im thinking there may be a mobo setting that is securing the connection? I have the asus p6t deluxe mobo.

Another thing that may be a factor is that the laptop is running on wireless connection and the desktop is running through ethernet.

please help and happy holidays

The mobo, bios, wouldnt have anything to do with securing the network connection.

If you think that the wireless aspect is a problem, why don't you try using an ethernet cable with the laptop?

What is the name of the program ? Maybe someone here may know something about it.

I'm thinking they posted that the wireless and laptop is OK it's the Desktop and wired connection that is the problem....

Using the laptop with a network cable would test the router's output I guess.....

Have you logged onto the router? Follow the directions in your user manual for the router and if you don't have it, view or download it from the support site for it....

There are usually Troubleshooting steps you can follow.

It may be that you by chance plugged the network cable to the one port in the back of the router that is configured as an uplink and not a normal Internet port?

Done that one once, myself.

The router is already configured for DMZ, but that doesnt help. I even tried making the port (port 5001) unblocked at all times on the router settings. port 5001 is the port the program is trying to use. the program is called strategy runner, its a trading platform.

Hmmmm maybe a run through with User Account Control possibly will help

http://www.windowsecurity.com/articl...rol-Vista.html

Also, this looks interesting>

Low Rights Internet Explorer
One other side note about WIM and UAC is that it enables LowRights Internet Explorer®, a setting that takes advantage of the low integrity level to protect users while they browse the Web. When running at Low, the process can interact with a very narrow set of directories and files on the system. If you have an ActiveX® control implemented as part of your application, which is hosted by Internet Explorer, you will want to test it to make sure it runs properly. For more information, see the whitepaper at msdn.micro*soft.com/library/en-us/ietechcol/dnwebgen/protectedmode.asp.

At the site above also look at the info under the heading Common Application Compatibility Issues farther down the page...

i also want to clarify that I am now running Windows XP 64 bit SP2. Any other suggestions on how I could make this program work? would there be any new 64 bit encrypting or protection built into the cpu to prevent this (or mobo)?

Just an update on the sitation: I took the desktop to my buddies home and it still didnt work. My guess is thesettings in the system or OS are preventing access to and from the program

Did you log off the application on one box before trying it on another box? It may not allow more than 1 login.

Thanks buddy you make a good point. I explained the situation to their tech support but they never mentioned that to be a cause. I never directly asked them. I plan on doing that, because thats the only thing that makes sense.
