First I would do is get rid of Norton. They consume way too much much system resources and slow your machine down. Get a good alternative like AVG, Avast, or Avira AntiVir. All are good and all are free.

Yes I agree KLR! I never have been a fan of Norton AntiVirus from Symantec. Because of the slowdown on some systems. But I talked to Michael York from Norton Authorized Support Team that is a member here, on how 2009 version is engineered for speed... I tried Norton 2009 and was please with results..

Yep and Norton has a better base then the free AVG .People love to be critical of Norton but I get it when it is almost free with rebates and 2008 was fast as well.

Hi mudias,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

When you try to manually run LiveUpdate, make note of the error code, find that code on the following page and then follow the instructions. Please NOTE: you should use Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher to click on the link below and run the "Fix Tools" listed in the document

Fix LiveUpdate Errors in Norton AntiVirus 2007

Also, are you sure that your subscription to Norton AntiVirus has not expired?

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mudias,

Since your subscription to Norton AntiVirus is still active, you are eligible for a free update to the 2009 version, which is highly recommended and should resolve the LiveUpdate problem. Norton AntiVirus 2009 contains a new LiveUpdate feature called "Pulse Updates."

Please carefully follow the steps below to properly uninstall the 2007 version and install Norton AntiVirus 2009. Please NOTE that this will upgrade Norton AntiVirus to the 2009 version but does not extend your subscription.

1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

3. Make note of your current Activation Key and then, using Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher visit the Norton Update Center using the link below to install Norton AntiVirus 2009.

Norton Update Center

4. After the installation is complete, launch Norton AntiVirus 2009 and manually run LiveUpdate. When LiveUpdate is complete, the "Pulse Updates" feature will be enabled.and Norton AntiVirus will then check for and install any available updates in the background every 5-15 minutes, as long as you are connected to the internet.

Please try this process and let me know if you have any problems.

Thank you,
Mike

thanks again!
thanks mike for the detailed instructions on updating to norton 2009. i've been getting a update offer for some time now, and i've downloaded a setup file and run it also, but there seems to be a problem with my internet connection which prevents the process reaching the end. (i use a dial-up connection which can be painfully slow at times, actually, most of the time!). i will try the links and see if it works.
meanwhile, i tried KLR's suggestion of re-installing the liveupdate program, which worked! thank you!!
