Hotfix-Q951748
Dear Cookiegal,

Hi! Thanks for your tip. I tried the link but it only goes to Microsoft updates & when I click on the check updates, it turned out nothing ie microsoft updates tells me that there is no updates for my computer?!!!

However, when I run Belarc again, it still shows the above important update missing.

You could get a second opinion from the Secunia Online Inspector (provided you have Sun Java installed). Check it out here; http://secunia.com/vulnerability_sca.../requirements/

Smile Fixed it
Hello,
I finally, after a week of trying, got this issue fixed. I downloaded the hotfix file (for WinXP SP3) and ran it, but it did not change the fact that Belarc was still identifying the patch as missing. Then I remembered that I am using a custom HOSTS file which requires that the DNS client in Windows XP is turned off by default to avoid a system slowdown. I renamed the HOSTS file and ran services.msc, turned on the DNS client, and reapplied the hotfix. Once I rebooted, Belarc reported all security patches present and accounted for. Of course, this may only apply to a small number of users, but I hope this helps anyone else who is getting the same anomaly.

Hi Benjamin,

Could you please clarify whether, before you tried to install 951748, Microsoft Update didn't say it was missing and only the Belarc Advisor did?

Also, did you have the DNS Client service Stopped and Disabled, or Stopped and set to Manual?

Hi cmvu,

Could you please comment on whether you had the DNS Client service Stopped and Disabled, or Stopped and set to Manual?

If so, it would be helpful if you could mention why you have it set that way.

Re: Q951748, Belarc and Windows Update
To Belarc Guy, I cannot say for others, but I was experiencing a similar issue, and I explicitly tried running Microsoft update again, and then running Belarc Advisor again to try to resolve conflicting reports from the two. Microsoft Update reported no criitcal updates missing, only an optional hardware for a 3COM modem driver, and three optional software updates (Silverlight, Media Player 11 and Microsoft Search). No security updates were reported. On rerunning Belarc Advisor after Microsoft Update, it still showed Q951748 as missing. Machine is Dell Latitude C810, MS Windows XP Pro w/SP3 applied.

Thanks to all.
.
I also had the Q951748 problem as reported by Belarc. Couldn't find any joy at MicroSoft Update. I downloaded the above Hotfix file and that did the job.
Sure glad I stopped by this forum. Thanks again.

Thumbs up Clarification
@Belarcguy - MS Update was not reporting any updates available. Only Belarc was showing it missing. DNS Service was set to Stopped and Manual.

I have been using Belarc Advisor on my personal machine for about 3 years now, and I put it on any machine that I am asked to do service on. It's just a handy piece of software. Had I not been using it, I would never have been aware of that particular hotfix.

I'm pretty sure that MS Update doesn't recognize it being an issue due to the DNS service being inactive, which is disconcerting. Maybe it was not an actual problem since it was an inactive service, but I don't like having unpatched software on my machine with all the bugs flying around on the intertubes. Between Belarc and Secunia PSI, I feel confident that I'm as safe as I can be as far as having up-to-date versions of my software.
