What does it mean when the staus of the local area connection shows that it is connected, shared?

It indicates you have Internet Connection Sharing enabled. This typically should only be enabled if you are connecting two computers together without a router or switch.

I do have a wireless router through which I tried to connect the other computers. So how do I change this status?

These instructions are for Vista ( copied from Windows Help)

Open Network Connections.

Right-click the shared connection, and then click Properties. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the Sharing tab, clear the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box, and then click OK.
