Possible browser hijacked
Hello. My system information is as follows:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name SONYVIAO
System Manufacturer Sony Corporation
System Model VGN-FE38GP
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~1995 Mhz
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~1995 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies LTD R0170J3, 17/08/2006

My problem is as follows and I have not been able to fix this despite running various scans for malware etc as well as installing explorer 8, (previously I had 7 installed). When I click on my internet explorer icon and the page opens, instead of it opening on my home page which have been set as www.mweb.co.za, in internet explorer 7 it would open up on the page where it tells you to download either explorer 7 or the updates to it. In the browser window it would say: http://www.gomicrosoft.com.

Since installing explorer 8, the browser window now says: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx, but it still reflects information on explorer 7 and its updates. The place in the top right hand corner refers to United States and even my repeated attempts to change this to South Africa on both pages referred to above, have been unsuccesful. When I go into internet options, it clearly states my home page to be mweb, but it does not open on it. When I then click on the homepage icon in the browser, only then will it take me to my homepage as listed in my internet options. When I click on the help button in my browser window, it reflects explorer 8 as being installed. Previously it had 7 reflecting before my new installation of explorer 8.

The other problem which I am sure is somehow related is that I also have installed the google toolbar. With explorer 7 I never had a problem with it. However with explorer 8, before the webpage opens which I have requested, it gives me an error message asking if I want to either search for updates for the google add on. Whether it should be disabled or enabled for this session. I normally just say enable for this session as repeated attemtps to find this addon have proved to be unsuccessful.

I have also tried to empty my "Temp" folder on a couple of occasions, but there seems to be some files which are called "Perflib_Perfdata_" which I cannot seem to delete. When I try, the error message I receive reads: "Cannot delete (the file name). It is being used by another person or programme".

Please let me hear from you.

No-Addon Mode
Try running IE without addons by going to:

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Addons)

If it runs properly this time then Google Toolbar is probably to blame.

When that page pops up click the home page button and see where it takes you.

Yes it does take me to my home page then. But it does not solve my problem which I had to start with. As I explained normally when I click on the icon for ie, the page referred to will open but when I click on the home icon in browser window my home page will open. I need my home page to open when I open my ie.

Uninstall Google Toolbar and tell us what happens when IE is opened normally. I told you to open IE without addons to determine if it was a browser problem or an addon playing up.

Isn't IE8 currently in Beta? I wouldn't struggle too much with it, there are still bugs. The whole point of a public Beta is to have the whole world try it and report the bugs in to Microsoft.
