Bullet proof security
I give up.

I have tried everything I know to do to stop garbage from corrupting my computer and am still routinely getting infected, hijacked and just generally abused. I currently have Panda as my main program, with SuperAntiSpyware running, Uniblue spyeraser running, Spybot running and recently added Peer Guardian. Yesterday I visited some sites associated with video gaming, I was trying to find a walkthrough for a specific game and whammo before I knew it I was infected.

My connection to the internet is provided via Verizon fiber optic through an ethernet cable connected to a router. I suppose a firewall is what I need but don't know much about the technology. The Microsoft firewall is disabled by Panda which is providing the firewall application. As I understand it there are 2 kinds of firewalls, a physical and an application, I have the application as provided by Panda but I guess not the physical.

Maybe the firewall thing is not the answer but I surely dont know what the answer is. I get a lot of advice about where not to visit and what not to do to keep from being infected but have to wonder if thats the best I can expect, really...?

Is there bullet proof security?

Dear Rocks911,
I remember reading in this very site that the "safest way to keep your PC from getting hit is to unplug it".
1) I agree with hrlow2 regarding most of the above programs he has installed.2) If you use IE, then disable third party cookies(under "Tools"> "internet options">"privacy"and set the slider to medium high).3) Presently the best bet is use Mozilla Firefox3.4) Install Ccleaner. Please don't use the "registry"option there.5) You can also install Fcleaner.6) Install Mcafee Site Adviser,as a guide to which sites are safe or not.Though not 100% accurate, the adviser is fairly reliable. Are you running the Panda anti-virus full scan ,if not daily, at the least 4 times a week? How are the Panda updates going? Are the updates automatic or manual? 7)Ad-aware free version is a good program.Try it. Leave no traces of your website searches daily.(Ccleaner and Fcleaner will do the job.). Register at http://www.mywot.com and you will get another layer of website safety.
I said i agree with MOST of Hrlow2's programs, simply because i have no experience with Comodo Internet Security. Of course,Comodo firewall Pro is top class!

Deep Freeze(45 Dollars) is supposed to be a geat program for total protection of C-Drive.STILL, BULLET-PROOFING A RUNNING PC?NAH!

There are Bazookas out there and Kavlar vests can't stop them!

Sounds like you have infections in your computer. If this is the case, they need to be cleaned out completely.... Then add security programs..

Thanks for the responses.

hrlow2,
Thanks for the list of recommendations, when I get the energy to again spend hours at the computer I'll give them a shot.

Kenny,
To be sure I did have an infection. I had to reinstall a clean version via Acronis. It's just pathetic that I cant surf the web without this kind of trouble. It's incredible how daunting the task of keeping your PC clean is, I mean really you've got to manage five or six programs to attempt to keep from getting your PC ruined? People are becoming pretty disenchanted with the cost vs. benefit of even participating. You mentioned that I needed to "add security programs", well did you have any in mind?

Maybe I'll take every suggestion and see if that will work, manage a dozen, or maybe twenty security applications, but then again maybe not, there has been no combination so far that has kept me from spending endless hours of scanning, updating, investigating, rebuilding, backing up, etc. etc. it's just rediculous.

Perfume,
My Panda product is "IS2008" which automatically updates. I scan with multiple applications daily. It seems to me though that it would be best to keep them off the machine in the first place. I think it's funny to read about the percent of garbage that a particular application can find AFTER it's on your machine. When the behavior of my machine indicated yesterday that I had a problem I scanned and wouldn't you know it several of the applications told me I had multiple problems. I never could get the machine to run correctly again after two hours of cleaning, re-booting, scanning, cleaning, re-booting, etc. etc.

perhaps a sandbox program could help you stay clean?

http://www.sandboxie.com/

sandboxie has a free and paid version,

sandboxie puts your browser inside a sandbox so that if you pick up any malware while browsing when you exit your browser you can just empty the sandbox and any malware is just deleted.

Some of the members here were recommended security programs. I never did... But if you wish, you can post HijackThis log and I'll be happy to look at it..

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also, I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* HijackThis Uninstall List
* HijackThis log (new)

Kenny,

I'll try that tommorrow, I'm at the fire station until then, thanks for the offer of help, though I've gotta say I think the version I reinstalled is pretty clean.

Gizzy,

That seems awfully interesting, never heard of that concept before.

I too am really pleased with Sandboxie. Very readable article on securing your PC here:

And there is no such thing as :bullet-proof". That is why everyone has to be vigilant in where they roam. If a baddie wants in, they will just try different angles until they find a hole.

It is true that there is no silver bullet. The bad guys constantly find security holes and infect your machines thru them. Since you got infected while surfing, the hole is probably through your browser. It is very important to do your Windows Update, as the patches fix the security holes found by white hat security people. Some suggest using an alternative browser like Firefox and Opera, but they are not immune, and also need to be updated as soon a fix is released.
I implement locking down of Windows as per these instructions here:
http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security2.html
These are preventative measures, and is better than remediating a bad situation after an infection. They are not infection-proof, but severely limits what the bad guys can do.
