Online Activity for ADSL accounts
Having just got broadband I have a question regarding online activity.

I've noticed that the connection is always active, even if I'm not browsing a web site or emailing. Is this part of the way ADSL works? My initial worries were that I had somehow got some spyware already on my PC. I've done some checking and found a few low risk cookies which have been deleted but nothing else.

If this is part of how ADSL works, then that's fine but I don't want to sit here on-line passing the contents of my PC to all and sundry.

It's not antivirus software or BT Vision. I'm using a basic BT Option 1 package.

Any help suggestions very welcome

Hi,
Do you have a BT Home Hub? I've had version 1 (white) and version 2 (black). The 3 buttons - power, broadband & wireless are always glowing on. Is this what you're refering to or have I misunderstood?

Hi

Yes slight misunderstanding. It is Home Hub 2.0 and the blue icons are always on the glow, even though I've set the wireless to not come on as I don't use it!

I did set the broadband light to flash on with activity and immediately found it too distracting so I turned that function off.

However the activity I'm monitoring is shown by the LAN and the Internet Connection icons under Networking Connections. Even when I'm not doing anything in a browser or emailing, the Packets sent and received are constantly going up which suggests that either my system is constantly talking to something/somebody or maybe this is just how ADSL works ie it's a function of supporting the service on the line. I don't know and can't find any information witin the BT set-up on this, hence the question.

Hope that's clearer. Thanks for any help you can give

A Windows network is 'chatty' by default. I like my network quiet unless I use it. To that end, I have unchecked Client for MS Networks, and File and Printer Sharing. Then in the advanced / Wins tab, I turned off NetBIOS. Then in Administrative Tools / Services, I have disabled Computer Browser, Server and Workstation. Turning off all these should quiet down your network. I don't know if All the settings needs to be off as I didnt test them individually. Turning off these services and option will also mean you cannot see other machines in your network, do mapped drives to them or share printers and folders.
