Solved: Good combo of free protection...?
I currently have Spyware Doctor, PCTools Anti Virus, Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and Privacy Guardian installed. I know I know, way too many. I got desperate because some problems just wouldn't go away.

I cannot currently afford to purchase Kaspersky 2009 or any other program at the moment but would like to secure my computer in the meantime.

Was currently thinking of removing everything and just installing the following:

Avira AntiVir Personal
SuperAntiSpyware
Malwarebytes
Sunbelt Personal Firewall

and maybe PCTools Threatfire.

Would this be a good combo to help keep my PC clean until I can afford something like Kaspersky 2009?

eh...I think it would be a good combo except I'm running Windows XP 64 pro. Seems the Sunbelt firewall and Threatfire aren't compatible with the 64 bit OS.

Any suggestions?

Primalucci,
Real interesting! PC Tools Threatfire is a freeware.but it's basic function is to detect viruses by a different mode. Since Avira Antivir Personal edition (Conventional method with real-time protection) seems to be your choice ,iam not really sure whether you can have these two A-V programs on the same PC. It's unanimously accepted that running two A-V 's on the same PC spells disaster! I really am not sure!!!!!.Wait before you jump. The 64bit thing is another matter altogether!

Thanks perfume. Threatfire was said to be safe to run with any antivirus program. But since its not compatible with my OS, obviously I'm not going to run it.

On the other hand, I did find a free x64 firewall I'm going to give a shot. Ghostwall was the only 64 bit firewall I could find. From what I've read from users, it seems to do the job nicely.

I highly recommend using COMODO Internet Security without Antivirus, Avira AntiVir free, and Sandboxie.
Defense plus is a HIPS application that is included in COMODO internet security, and you can disable it if you don't like it; it just adds extra layer of protection.
If you use sandboxie when you browse, when I say using sandboxie while surfing, I mean using sandboxed web browser, you shouldn't get any malwares from the internet since every activity occurs in an isolated environment.
Finally, Avira is just amazing PERIOD. By the way, if you want to disable annoying pop up you get while updating avira, just google "how to disable avira pop up."

P.S. Use Malwarebytes' anti-malware free as a backup scanner.

rOadToIS,
Man,your user name is confusion compounded! Still, could get it right. Your choice of programs is O.K. Don't forget that Comodo Internet security is not a freeware! So,you can strike it off.Talk about Comodo firewall Pro (CFP)-and iam all for it!
Dear PrimaLucci,
How about CFP? It's top notch!

In a recent PC Magazine review, Comodo's suite is rated weak on detecting viruses.

I would suggest using just their firewall instead with a good AV like Avast.

Myself, I have a paid copy of Kaspersky 2009 on one PC. Quite good, and it will be even gooder if I get the the two rebate checks that were promised with it. I am quite impressed by it. Even though it has 2 more licenses, I still run free Avast and OnLine Armor on another PC.

There are two versions of CIS. One is free and the other isn't. I was talking about the free version. Also, Comodo firewall is included in CIS.

That's why I told him to exclude the AV engine! When you install CIS, Comodo gives you an option to disable av engine.

My personal selection that works for me is:
Comodo firewall
Avira AntiVir
SuperAntiSpyware
MalwareBytes

In which case, why not just install the firewall by itself and not have the baggage of code that's installed, but not used? Smaller is better. The reviewer did say that the stand alone firewall and Avast or AVG is an excellent combination.

CIS will not install AV engine and its components if you choose not to install AV feature during the installation process.
So, it's same as installing CFP.
By the way, when you're deciding which security product to use, you should not rely on only one review because each reviewer has different testing method.

Let me add just one more thing. CFP+AVAST or AVG may be a good combination to beginners, but that combination can be easily bypassed by some malwares. That's why I told him to use Sandboxed web browser in conjunction with CIS w/o AV and Avira. They can provide much better protection than CFP+Avast or AVG combination can.

I use( and have for a long time) Comodo firewall, Avira AntiVir, SuperAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard.
I do NOT use a sandbox and I can go to the roughest sites you name in confidence in my defenses. The only things that gets in to my system are first party cookies, which I can delete with WinPatrol.
Not every application or website needs that type of extremism. May be useful if you frequent the "Dark Side" of the web with the wrong settings on your protection.
