big buda,
If you are serious about downloading a free A-V software , then Kenny94's reply should suffice. He is a true gentleman and was gracious enough to answer the same question posted many times in this fora! I concur with his response! What A-V is protecting your PC right now?

I've tried Avira free edition before and it didn't include email protection. Did this change since then? Overall, I really didn't like it. Updates were slow, and there were ads also!

Definitely avira and avast.
By the way, if you are looking for a solution that will prevent malwares 99.99% of the time while surfing, I highly recommend you using sandboxie.

The no email protection isn't that much of a big deal since
1. A lot of people check their email from their browser so the email scanner is useless against that,
2. If you do use an email client then anything opened that contains a malware that avira can detect then the real-time guard will alert you of it,

But yes last I remember the free version downloaded the updates from a slower server then the premium version,

And you do get an ad but as far as I know (which I could be wrong) only when you perform the definitions update...so maybe once a day,

Very nice detection rate though,

Anyway for a free anti-virus I prefer avast with avira as my second choice,

Avast and Avira are both equally good choices. I personally use Avast, and it has saved me many times from virus.
I wouldnt recommend AVG. Recently, my cousin's PC got a virus. AVG would detect it, but it couldnt remove it, even no delete option was there, and the option to move to chest wouldnt work. The virus shut AVG down. I got rid of AVG. Installed Avast on the PC, and it got rid of the virus. Thumbs up for Avast!

Dear CapriAnupam,
Would you beleive if i tell you that AVG8 which i used for 20 days, saved my PC's skin! The command "move to vault"worked perfectly. The one single reason why i too would'nt recommend it is THE REMOVAL OF THE AVGSE.DLL FILE is extremely difficult and actually AVG apologised for the trouble the new Version's removal was causing to users!

While trying to install KIS2009,i had to seek the help in this forum for removing avgse.dll. KIS just refused to install until the last vestiges of AVG were removed. It was one real bad trip.

So,if you peruse thru' threads like this, you'll come across many personal favourites and who's playing the"high judge" here? One member strongly recommends Comodo Internet Security Suite, about which most of us have little experience (hands on). Tried and tested ones are the choices available, and it's a free country after all!

Dear perfume,
I will surely believe you that AVG saved your PC. The first free antivirus that i tried was AVG, and it was on my PC for several months. But, on numerous occassions, my PC got infected. Then i tried Avira, and it worked well for me. Few months later, i had to send my hard drive for replacement, and in meanwhile, as an experiment, i installed Avast on the PC. Since then it has become my primary antivirus, cause it has saved my PC from virus many times.

So, i was not being a high judge, as u say it. I was just sharing my experience and giving my opinion. And also, i have seen in some forums, several experienced people give preferance to Avira and Avast over AVG. That itself speaks a lot.

Anyways, yes, i think AVG is a healthy competitor among free antivirus, and at the end of the day, with choices available, its a matter of personal preference, own experiences, and own choices.

BTW, the link u put, says its invalid
