Solved: Hi Cookiegirl - I have a small question?
Last week my computer crashed and I had to have DELL wipe my hard drive and help me reinstall my windows operating system. In talking with the tech that helped me - he said I had gotten a virus. I told him that I had Norton as well as Registery Mechanic and AD-Aware and always kept them updated. He told me I shouldn't have that many security programs on my computer?? Needless to say I went and bought a McAfee virus software and have been afraid to put any other security programs on my computer. Do you think I should put a spyware program on too and if so - which one - also is McAfee a good program - I went through a few of the posts on here and didn't see anything about McAfee. Now I'm worried I just blew 60.00 for nothing (smile)! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I have seen people have WAY more protection than you do.

Having all kinds of spyware programs won't hurt you - but having them all run in the background could slow you down.

It's really more than one anti-virus program that could cause conflicts.

Have a look here for helpful tips to keep your computer safe:

Advice well MacAfee is not amongst the best antivirus but virus themselves are less of a problem these days anyway. I would suggest you run an antispyware program, paid version in the background though as spyware is a much greater threat these days. Superantispyware, malwarebytes and Spysweeper are amongst the best known and most effective.

Cheeseball and Rich-M,
Thanks for your replies! I will try a spyware program although my McAfee does have one within the program I bought - Wish me luck (grin)!!!

Dear Tamhbrih,
If your query was addressed to the Admin., i hate to tell you that the username of her's is COOKIEGAL. Sorry to have broken the egg all over your head!

People are sometimes sensitive about their user names. Mine is perfume.Do you know why i selected it? A perfume fades away with time and this particular "pour Homme" will fade sooner than the rest, that's why! Ask Kenny94 , brett888 and Karbo and many of my friends in the forum.

Dear Tamhbrih,
No hard feelings, i hope! Now,you or i would'nt have an A-V on our systems unless we want to be secure from viruses. Mcafee was good (i used it), but Kaspersky and nod32(ESET) have simply become better and faster in their detection of threats, primarily viruses! The adware blocking power of KIS2009 is excellent.

Ad-Aware does slow your system down (I have the anniversary edition installed) and my fingers are itching to un-install it! If you see the same type of adware(TIA Family) being detected every time you run a scan, you are better off without that software OR you are being naughty, visiting the same unsafe websites regularly! It' been sometime since i've used Mcafee and am not sure of it's Adware detection capability. You can tell us that!

As Rich M said, members of this site ,swear by the detection capabilities of SAS (i prefer "Pro"-Updates are amazing), MBAM (Anti-malware king) Spyware Blaster in conjunction with SpywareGuard (Comes with SpywareGuard Live(Dead!) Update), because hrlow2 tells me it's been ages since the've released updates!Best wishes!

SpywareGuard may be "dead", but is still very effective program because it acts on behaviour, rather than having to download signatures of known types. Goes on any machine I service.

I've heard that paid verisions of firewalls/viruses are far better than free ones. McAfee viruscan, IMO, works pretty good.

Zonealarm Avg8 spywareblaster and WOT web of trust

But no amount of protection will protect you if you are not aware

just take a look in the HJT dept
