Unhappy Internet Security Disabling Itself
This is a bit of a mystery.

Today, at about 2:40 pm my mother started up the computer to use the internet. We have Norton Internet Security 2009 (we still have plenty of days left before the subscription expires) which has been running fine up until now, when a small pop-up message appears stating that: "You have turned off your antivirus. You are not protected."

Anyway, when I return home, I started up the computer and noticed the small Norton icon in the task bar is flashing red. It continues to flash as if disabled for a few seconds before turning back green.

The first thing I do is open up NIS to see if it is still turned on. It is.

I then check its history, and this is where things get odd.

2:38:53 pm - Intrustion Prevention has been enabled.
2:39:32 pm - User logged in.
2:40:18 pm - Silent mode turned off.
2:40:18 pm - Light silent mode turned off.
2:40:18 pm - Firewall has been disabled.
2:40:22 pm - Firewall setting "Firewall Enabled" changed.
2:40:22 pm - Startup Mode has been set to manual.
2:40:22 pm - Internet Security has been turned off.
2:40:24 pm - Firewall configuration updated: 42 rules.
2:40:27 pm - Intrustion Prevention has been disabled.
2:40:29 pm - Browser Protection for Internet Explorer has been disabled.
2:40:30 pm - Browser protection for FireFox has been disabled.

How all of those features ended up disabled in a matter of seconds before the computer even connected to the internet is baffling.

Almost as strange is the fact that everything (except the early load feature) was re-enabled when I started up the computer.

My mother has an even more limited knowledge of computers than I do and has no idea what is wrong with our computer.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

- Unlucky Pete

That looks very much like what happens when a subscription runs out.
I would try one click support and see if it can fix it.Also look at subscription status.
Both can be accessed from the Help and Support button.
It may have fixed itself.
If no success - follow up with Norton support on web.

Most anti-virus programs do not turn themselves off when the term expires but some features may not work (such as the ones you mentioned which includes the Firewall and real-time protection) and you can't update them so you would be using old virus definitions.

Malware can also disable many functions of these programs though so it might be a good idea to post in the Malware Removal & HijackThis forum to get checked out. But check your expiration date first to eliminate that possibility. Sometimes the date you think it will be is not the actual one.
