For those who use Spybot: Spybot S&D 1.6.2 is now out
You can read about it here.

I haven't seen any of the machines I run Spybot on get updated with 1.6.2 yet but we'll see if they get upgraded over the weekend.

Peace...

Interesting! The integrated updater appears to only be concerned with definitions rather than program updates.

However, when I opened Spybot to install the 28th January definitions, I saw a small box which I had never seen before. It said 'Counting temporary files', scrolled up to 10637 and then displayed ' 0 in use cannot be removed' after which the program opened normally. Some sort of preliminary to a program update perhaps, or a glitch in my copy? My current version is 1.6.0.30.

The internal updater also does program updates. I read on the Spybot forum that the internal updater will download the program update once it has propagated to the mirror sites. Some think the internal updater will pick up the program update starting Wednesday of next week.

I've seen that "Counting temporary files" dialog before. For me, there are usually a handful of temp. files that can't be deleted due to being in use but I've never see the '0 in use' message.

I think the deletion of temp. files in Spybot 1.6 is normal but I'm not sure of the '0 in use' message is indicative of a problem or not.

Peace...

Dear tombkat,
Unfortunately,i have KIS2009 on my system. While installing KIS, it insisted on the removal of Spybot which was a pity!

KIS has its own integrated anti-spyware application along with its anti-virus application so not running Spybot won't be that big of a deal. Given some of the things Spybot can do, it might interfere with some other applications.

I didn't start this thread to recommend people start running Spybot as to alert those who already use it that a new version is out.

Peace...

Right now 1.6.2 will not come up as a upgrade from running updates. I still have 1.6.0 and there are no updates.

Update to 1.6.2 finally there [link] 26. January 2009
News article

The probably last maintenance release of Spybot-S&D 1.6.2 is finally ready, available starting today on the first mirrors, with more becoming available as they're added. It will also be available through the integrated updater soon after it is online completely.

Among its bugfixes and new features are support for the latest Opera releases, support for Googles new browser Chrome, fixed support for fresh older Firefox installations, improved support for fast user switching while Spybot is running, plus a few more bugfixes.

A preview of Spybot 2.0 will also be available as soon as servers have adjusted to the additional 1.6.2 release load.

I ran an update of an outdated Spybot installation last night and 1.6.2 got downloaded and installed. Those running Spybot 1.6.0 might start seeing the upgrade to 1.6.2 through the normal update process now.

Peace...

I usually do several updates at the same time. Is this a bad thing?

Here's what happened. I was updating my Spybot at the same time as my Winblows. At the same time as my Defender. At the same time as my AVG.

So when I was in the middle of a Windows update and Spybot finished first and prompted me to do something, I clicked on the choice to not do anything, figuring I could install the update later just by clicking on the update button.

Bah!

I've been meaning to nuke the system anyway. So this gives me an excuse to download the entire thing from scratch.

I've updated various apps at the same time as running a Windows update and have not had any problems AS LONG AS I don't reboot the machine until ALL of the updates have completed.

What problem did you run into?

Peace...

Sorry to hear that BanditFlyer.

On my old PC with 98SE I had to learn to alway say NO on a reboot doing a MS update. I would get a BSOD almost ever time and other errors if I said OK.
If I said no and then closed IE down on my own and rebooted on my own all would be OK but to let windows do it for was always trouble.

Dear hewee,
Does running so many updates at the same time, slow down the update speed? Does it hog CPU resources more than it would be otherwise?
