FYI MSAS2009.exe nastier FYI
30 Jan 2009, I encountered a computer infected with MS AS 2990.
HJT ran ONLY after renaming HiJackThis.exe to puppy.exe . I downloaded the executable, not the installation program.
Combofix would not run, even after renaming prior to install.
MalwareByte AM would not finish the installation
SuperAntispyware would not run
I downloaded the programs from a different computer.
Using IE 7 & FF 3.0.5, I was able to browse to some web sites, but not to:
TechGuy.org
BleepingComputer.com
AVG.com
Kaspersky.com
My hosts file had not been modified.
Above sites were not in IE's restricted zone.
Win XP Pro SP2
Antimalware included AVG Internet Security, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard
Re-formatting and re-installing at this time.
