Anyone heard of a virus corrupting a hd?
Hi guys,

Has anyone heard of a virus corrupting a hard drive?

Sorry this is slightly long...

I've never really had any problems with my comp. As well as the usual security programs, such as adaware, spybot I've also been using NOD32 system security.

A couple of weeks ago, out of the blue my computer just restarted on itself...
Didn’t think much of it at the time, was busying watching tv (and only noticed it from the corner of my eye). It went thru the normal reboot process, (no errors) and came up to the loading windows screen with the bar... then restarted again..

This time I did take notice.. again the comp loaded up, but this time giving me the option of entering safe mode etc.. I selected safe mode, the comp loaded up to the loading screen... and restarted again...

I basically went thru every available option given to me including using previous successful setting... same thing happens... reboots at loading screen.

Ok so now I'm intrigued... what has happened and why won’t safe mode work either...

This time I stick in the windows CD and attempt to repair windows (incase the boot sector was damaged).. ran chkdisk... but chkdisk said the drive is damaged and unable to repair!

Trying to salvage whatever information I had on the drive (not too fused with programs, music or docs... but drive contained wedding pics as well as digital baby pics of my kids that I promised to myself to one day take to be printed...)

I should point out that I had setup my 500GB Western digital drive with 2 partition.. one containing windows, the other containing all my files... I have formatted the windows partition many time before and this seemed to be a good way to safely retain all my important data.

I took the drive out and stuck it into a 2nd system... 2nd system unable to access the drive... drive only displaying 1 partition... where the heck did the 2nd one go...?

Now I'm devastated... I cant find the 2nd partition (maybe they became corrupted and merged together) so am assuming all my data is gone.

I now try and format the drive... format works successfully up to 98% then an error comes on. Something is missing.. cannot format...

I tried formatting thru dos as well as using the xp cd... same result 98% only...

I then decided before throwing the drive away to give it to my cousin who is an MPS and builds computers for a living... (well part time anyway).. He said he has some software that may be able to retrieve my data.. After a week no luck on he's part on retrieving data aswell as formatting the drive. Same result each time 98%.

I assumed the drive was messed up, just my luck for it to die within 3 years, and me not backing up any of the data either... so I ordered a new 1TB drive.

Yesterday before my cousin gave me back my drive (going to try and send it back to WD to see if its covered by warranty) he's computer has now gone into an endless loop of rebooting at the windows loading screen. Safe mode not working either...

Just a coincedence both our drives kicked out at the same time... or maybe something more?

While I understand the frustration, I've edited an acronym for profanity and another word that was censored out of your post. Even if a word is starred out by the board censors, it's still not acceptable to use those words. Please be more careful in the future.
