Solved: When to replace a computer??
I HAVE USED A HP DESKTOP FOR 5 YEARS WHEN THE HARD DISK DIED ON ME! THE ONE BEFORE, WAS A PRESENT FROM MY UNCLE AND I REMEMBER IT WAS A BULKY IBM.

NOW I HAVE A LENOVO DESKTOP AND THE CONCEPT OF A "BACKUP AND RESTORE" WAS A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT TO ME UNTIL I BECAME A MEMBER OF THIS SITE!

BECAUSE OF MY YOUNG AGE AND INEXPERIENCE(RELATIVE IN RELEVANCE), WHEN HP CRASHED I LOST ALL MY DATA(MOSTLY MUSIC ALBUMS!) AND GOD,HOW I REGRET IT.

WHILE I WAS BROWSING THIS FORUM, I READ A MEMBER ASKING"CAN A VIRUS CORRUPT A HARD DISK?" YES OR NO?

NOW THE VITAL QUESTION I POSE IS WHEN SHOULD A PC BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE? SORRY FOR THE BOLD TYPE.
I SINCERELY REQUEST THE ADMIN TO KEEP THIS POST IN THIS FORUM! PLEASE COOKIEGAL!

A PC should be replaced when it doesn't do what you want it to do anymore. Or when you have the money and need(want) a more powerful machine that does more than you will ever do with it!!

It really depends on what you use your computer for mainly. I don't game so I don't need a powerful system since the majority of my time is spent surfing the internet, checking emails, burning CD's, etc. I've been using the same PC (AMD Athlon 2200) for the past 7 years without any problems. I always keep my data files on a separate partition so that if the PC crashes I simply restore the Operating System without losing any data. A full restore only takes about 5 minutes and my PC is right back to where it was prior to any problems.

Regards,
Rollin

Dear friends,
PERHAPS I SHOULD RE-PHRASE THE QUESTION TO ADD "USUALLY HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A HARD DISK TO DIE?".

Theoretically, yes; by writing repeatedly to the same sector of the hard disk until it fails. In practice this is unlikely to happen, for a variety of reasons.

I would suggest replacing yor PC if:
1. the hardware fails
2. it no longer does what you want (i.e. won't run new software, or not fast enough for gameplay etc.)
3. you have loads of spare cash and wan't a real dogs bollocks system to impress your pals

Hard drives usually die within the first few weeks of use or last until they're obsolete, aside from the occasional sector failure which is handled pretty well by NTFS.

That's a tough question, I have had a hard drive die after a year, and I have had them run for 10 years and longer. It just all depends.

Its time to get a new pc when
you have a few hundres extra dollars
Your machine isnt very fast due to the demanding applications being produced, that your older hardware chugs on.
At last but not least.....timing......you can always purchase a brand new machine at big savings 6 months after that model originally came out.

to perfume
I have seen hard drives before that gave plenty of warning signs that the end was near, and I have also seen them work fine until turned off but be dead on the next reboot.
There is really no 100% positive way of knowing.

brett888,
Nice hearing from you! You are one smart cookie, are'nt you? Buy the shares when they are low and sell when they top up! Your point is well taken about buying a pc when the prices fall!

I too don't play any games on my pc. They are loaded with files to study for the upcoming Entrance tests to get into MD! Now i have an EXTN.HDD and duplicate files are created there on an incremental basis using Macrium Reflect Backup and Restore.

I object to the fact that if you have spare cash to spend, upgrade the pc! My Dad can spare millions for that, as iam the only son and he won't deny!

The question is more technical! Before the new versions of pc's came, you had problems downloading photographs onto a computer. Now, you simply insert the memory card in the slot provided and zoom, your pic's are uploaded! Just Zip them and e-mail them in a snap! In the olden days, updating mobile phones was a pain, now it's just a jam and bread job!

Why do the BIG players in the market release new models? We are not so naive as to simply plump for an LCD Monitor and other thingys!

What percent of Hard Disks that roll out of a factory are perfect in every sense of the word? There lies the conundrum!

Honestly i think there are more hd failures than there used to be.its not uncommon for a failure after 50 or a 100 hours of operation.

Ofen times the failed hd can still be read as a slave.

Right now is the time to get a dual core processor dual layer dvd writer

plus all the ports and jacks to fill the sides of the pc. just think 2

dual core

dual layer

ddr2

2 hd

the timing is right

Dear Bullfrog,
I can understand your angst when i used "caps lock on" in my original post. I also added that i was sorry for the bold type! I know it's considered "rude" when you use caps lock on. But it was just one of those things which happen unknowingly. I am sorry if i have adrenalized you!

You are "intermediate" in experience but a junior member in this site! I must have posted more than three hundred messages in this site and this is the only instance when i used "caps lock on".I intend no offense and offer no defense! I am what i am,take it or leave it!

As a great philosopher said" those who me will understand and about those who don't know me ,i don't care"!
