Here is how to use the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Click on Start>run>type mrt>follow short simple directions.
Not a replacement for anti virus programs...
Hope this is helpful to anyone wondering what is this thing called Malicious Software Removal Tool and how does it work?

No, just a windows shortcut. Locate the exe, right-click, create shortcut. Move the shortcut where ever you want it and rename it if you want.

Dear Sniper,
I've been extremely impressed by the performance of this tool which i run regularly. The only thing bothering me was it was showing the same list of malware it could detect! Thanks a lot for the info' that the new update has come! I found it so useful that i have a desktop shortcut.Sorry for not sharing about this tool with you!!LOL

You are welcome. I do not know why Microsoft did not make shortcuts for some of these programs. The Outlook ScanPST program is another. Puzzling.

MRT is regularly updated; Windows/Microsoft Update should pull the updates down for you. I think there was a TaskScheduler entry or entries (at least in Vista) to automatically run this, too. However, I cleaned out most of the entries in TaskScheduler on my machine so that I could manage my machine myself.

Not bad. Never knew the mrt scan ever existed! How come Microsoft doesn't make it more public? It's not even in any Windows menu that I know of. Unfortunately, the updates aren't done often...

I can't get any updates, since last August, even going to the update site, something wrong with my machine, but now I know about mrt and can run it and get the update for it.
It was just the fact that I didn't know you could run it yourself.

Yea not many people know you can run it manually,

I think they want it to be silent so not to confuse people with some thing new,

When you get the updated version it does a silent scan for you and if it detects anything it'll alert you the next time you boot into an administrator account,

Here's more info about it -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830

Dear MR.Newton,
MSRT(Malicious Software Removal Tool)lol is updated once a month as i have checked the MS site just now!

Dear hrlow2,
Correct me if i am wrong, but i've seen the site mentioning monthly updates! Even i couldn't download the Feb version. MS automatic update claims the updating will be done on it's own once you have installed the first version of MSRT! The version i have is so cryptic that i had to write it down to type it here: windows KB 890 830-v 2.6. (Mysterious name and a numbered version). One way or the other BG has the upperhand!Damn his genius!
