Solved: antivirus
I have Norton Systemworks, Trend Micro and Spy sweeper which expired a short while ago. A computer person who came to my house told me I have an infection (which is "not bad") and to get Webroot Antivirus and remove all the above programs and do the webroot antivirus. He said the infection might prevent the download. I do not want to do if this isn't going to work. What can anyone advise I do or should I do above? Thanks

Hi,
If there is an infection, before doing anything else I think you need to post a HijackThis Log, instructions at this TSG 'sticky':
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...st-before.html

You'll need to 'report' this thread to ask for it to be moved to the Malware forum.
Please be patient as there aren't that many qualified Malware experts but there are loads of people seeking their help.

Richard.

I am not very computer savvy and posting a HIJACK this log seems like a lot. The computer is running slower. I am planning on getting the Webroot product, not sure which one as I currently have spysweeper (expired), Norton systemworks (expired) & trend micro - I have also recently got a new router (lynksys) which the computer set up for my desktop & laptop but connection takes forever on the desktop which I think is the router. Anyway for now will get Webroot antivirus or internet security - which is better?

The computer might be slow since u have these three expired programs on it and they might be conflicting once u purchase another antivirus or internet security..uninstall all of them and then install it and your computer should work better in all aspects.
would suggest norton internet security 2009 or N360 2.0, rest is up to u to decide.

Please follow the advice of S 4 U.

This forum's malware removal experts will guide you, step by step through the process.

Your plan could easily result in the loss of all of your data [ files, pictures, music, financial records; anything you have created / stored on your computer ].

Having 2 antivirus programs on your computer is a bad idea. Often they will fight with each other to protect your computer, and the result will be a non functioning computer.

An old / out-dated antivirus program is a bad idea because the user can develop a false sense of security. It is like driving a car, in which the seat belt is simply taped to the inside of the car. In a collision, you will not be protected.

2 anti spyware programs running on your computer will often give good protection, but 2 anti virus programs or 2 firewalls will cause problems. Be careful when buying an anti spyware program that has an option to add, for $10 an anti virus component. This anti virus component will fight with your existing anti virus program.

There are many good anti virus and anti spyware programs available. Some of the free ones provide some protection. You will find many opinions about the best programs.
For example: http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...s-spyware.html

Best of success.

Thank you. So what S4U is telling me to remove my current Systemworks, Trend Micro & Spy sweeper and then put on like Norton Internet Security or Webroot Internet Security which was my original plan correct? I am afraid that if I do the Hijack this procedure incorrectly, I might lose info as Rainforest states, so I guess I'll guess I'll go with my original plan and hope that works. Thank you everyone for your support. I really appreciate it.
