Unhappy Help With DOS (?) Attack...
Either it’s a horrid coincidence or I’ve gotten a Denial of Service attack (after someone threatened to do so yesterday on Above Top Secret)

Last nights AVG scan (before I closed down my computer) came up with nothing.

I tried to update Spybot S&D but it wouldn’t update - freezes half way through update installation.

Any site I connect to on the web takes forever to load and most sites I have to use task manager to get out of as they freeze.

This site took 1/2 an hour to get this far here and still none of the graphics show up until now. (The bullets and buttons, etc)

1) How do you fix a denial of service attack?

2) Please recommend a good on line site for scanning my computer for virus, DOS codes, etc - that does NOT require a credit card and does NOT tell me how many problems can be fixed if I buy there product once the scanning is done.

In other words a good clean computer scanning site with no gimmicks.
Thanks so much in advance for your help.

I can’t tell you how badly I need this computer. It’s my life line at the moment.

I'm on a second hand MaxData computer that's been running fine for a while using XP.

For a DOS attack, the only thing you can try and do is to change your ip address. Power off your modem and count to 20, hopefully your ISP's DHCP will give you a new ip address.

Kaspersky has a online antivirus scanner that doesnt do removal :

What do you mean by DOS attack. A denial of service attack is against a web server, not against individual surfers. A DOS attack occurs when a website is overwhelmed with fake requests so that it can not serve any real requests and causes them all to time out. It can not be performed against an individual surfer as far as I know and understand. I am not saying you are free of malware infection, but this has nothing to do with a DOS attack.

Hi Rbalaji,

A DOS attack can be done not just to web servers. If a bot net is commanded to send millions of ICMP pings to your computer, then it is a denial of service, cause you will be flooded with traffic.

OK, good to know. I guess having a dynamic IP address helps since they can't target my computer with a domain name!
