Once installed version of mcAfee expires
Hi all

I could do with some help, my pre-installed security suite 'mcAfee' has now expired. my questions are:

though i know my Anti-virus is no longer active is my firewall still working,anti-spam etc.

and if what are the pros and cons of using AVG free.

i.e do i have to completely uninstall all the components of Mcafree.

and does free version of AVG still have a firewall

im sorry if these Q are a little dumb but, this is my first pc for over 8 years

Dear threesheets,
Welcome dear friend! If you are teenager like me who steps over the line now and then ,you'll get a rap on the knuckle! The Admin knows i am more innocent and less dumb! That's all! No questions are dumb, as they are the ones which create fierce debate in this site!

McAfee Security has a validity for only one year! So,no A-V, no firewall, no anti-spam!Finis.

Pros and cons exist in every A-V, but the ratio changes. Nothing's pluperfect, but the nearer you can reach there the better! AVG, Avira Antivir, Avast (all free) ? Since you mentioned AVG,let's contain our debate to it. AVG Free is very good and has real-time protection. Updates have been reported to be a problem. It (think) has anti-spyware function ,but it's no rock of Gibraltar!

Yes, you have to completely uninstall McAfee, before installing AVG.(It goes for any A-V)

AVG Free has no firewall. Check it out here:http://free.avg.com/

Your first PC in eight years!Treasure this one Buddy and keep it safe from all the malicious folks out there! Best Wishes!!

McAfee AV and firewall are probably still working, just not receiving any updated AV definitions or other upgrades. So you need to install a working AV and firewall program ASAP. Personally, I like Norton Internet Security 2009. Check out Fat Wallet for possible deals, coupons, etc. Free programs are good, but you pretty much get what you pay for, and a well regarded single program like NIS 2009 is worth the investment, IMHO. As for uninstall, another very good option is Revo Uninstaller, maybe the best such program around. Good luck.
